But its not like a fill the kong up with it. Just a generous smear on the inside, maybe a few tablespoons. Enough to keep her busy when I first leave the house.
Other than that she gets some food in training, but not tons. She likes toys way better. And marrow bones now and then.
I ended up getting the red meat formula and green beans. When reading the labels I almost picked up the senior formula, it has slightly less fat and a little more fiber from veggies.Six in one half a dozen in the other.
But its not like a fill the kong up with it. Just a generous smear on the inside, maybe a few tablespoons. Enough to keep her busy when I first leave the house.
Peanut Butter runs about 90 calories a tablespoon so those PB calories could still be equal to 1/2 cup of kibble.
Have you though about soaking the kibble (it will expand nicely!) stuffing it in the kong and freezing that instead? You could even put a touch of PB in it if you wanted, but just a taste!
I did that before but she lost interest in it very quickly. I would hear her barking when I left, and the kong would still be almost full when I got home. Even adding a little peanut butter or cream cheese to it wouldn't hold her interest.
With the PB she just chills out. By the time its gone I'm pretty sure she goes to sleep.
She loves those frosty paws things. Do you think making her a little fro yo for the kong would be good?
I would try something like that - anything to cut those calories down!
I might try the soaked kibble again but just add in more PB. Even if you still use half the amount, you're cutting out about 25% of the calories. Or you might try something like canned pumpkin or cooked sweet potato. Some dogs really love those.
As far as suggestions for what to put in the Kong, how about one of the canned varieties of Evo? I use their canned venison occasionally to add some novel protein to my dogs' diet, and they love it. I just looked at one of my cans, and they give the calories for the whole can (523) but I'm sure if you compare tablespoon to tablespoon, it's fewer calories than peanut butter.
That's still a little high, but certainly not a bad idea. Maybe using the green beans mixed with kibble and the canned food, frozen in the kong, would work if she got it instead of breakfast.
When I fed raw, she always got her honest kitchen in the kong for breakfast. It was easy for me and she loved it. Kept her busy while I did stuff around the house, too.
What proportions of the other stuff do you put in?
Mara, THK got to be too expensive for me, and its not easy to find localy. I'm not at all well organized enough to order it on time! Plus I would worry about potential poop problems of feeding something so different for one meal.
eta: never mind, Aaron. The first time I looked only the picture loaded. The text was there when I checked the second time.
