It lasts about 4 hours.
Guess what happens when it wears off?
Not only does the anxiety come back, it is actually *multiplied*.
Flank sucking is also not necessarily anxiety, it can be boredom or obsessive behavior, which aren't going to be treated by an anxiolytic medication like Xanax.

Exactly why I'd give it an enthusiastic NO. Koenig is on multiple SA medications, and he gets a Xanax before he's crated as well. (I know that you this Aaron, I just wanted to explain it for the OP's benefit.)
It's usually not a good idea to medicate anyone, or anything unless it's a last ditch effort.
Flank-sucking is well-known among long-time Doberman owners. There has been research that points to a genetic predisposition in that particular breed. I'm not offering any opinion on what is causing this in your GSD, but this link contains information you may find helpful:
Welcome to the forum. It is good to hear that you are getting him a larger kennel indoors, but honestly, I'm not convinced that alone is going to help this. In addition to a good 1 - 1.5 hours exercise before you leave him in the AM, is there a chance you could hire someone to come mid-day and throw a ball for him for another 45 minutes or an hour? I fear this guy is telling you in no uncertain terms he is going a bit crazy... The frozen kongs already mentioned are absolutely a great idea as well.
Sounds like you have a wonderful, high drive dog who needs more interaction/exercise/mental stimulation that he is getting at the moment. You are to be commended for seeking out help for your pup!
