I wasn't suggesting a dog should be left to suffocate in a car. It is my personal practice to not take my dogs with me if the weather is too hot for them to be in the car with the windows closed. I can think of a few exceptions, like if I'm parked at one of my training clubs or in a friend's driveway or such. What other people do is their business, of course.
I agree, no one has any business sticking their hands in my car, either, but a "victim's" intent is not an element that must be proven in a dog bite case, at least not in my state. Just sayin' I like to err on the side of caution when it comes to the legal system.
Just wanted to add that I think having a dog secured in a crate/kennel while traveling in a car is another measure of keeping the dog and passengers safer in case of an accident. It would also protect the dog somewhat from idots sticking hands in the car, but that is not why I choose to use one.
I use a soft crate in the car. The nylon/net windows on the crate are black and it's very hard to see the dog in the crate.
I feel much better about leaving the dog in the car with the windows wide open (I'm talking gassing up and rest stop breaks while traveling---nothing longer in the summer) while I'm not there to protect him.
I hope a soft crate would protect the dog in a crash, but I doubt it. I've thought of an airline type crate, but I don't think they provide enough ventilation. (Tell me if I'm wrong)

If there is a way to secure the soft crate, that would be helpful... anything to keep the crate and dog from becoming a projectile in the car.
Randy, in a perfect world I would agree with you 100%. I think anyone stupid enough to try to get in my car or reach in deserves what they get. Unfortunately to protect my dog I was nice to those people who lifted up their daughter to pet her. While underneath I wanted to punch them in the face.
Which brings me to the lesson I am learning here, I must be smarter and protect the dog from people and other dogs. I should have never had my dog in a situation with an aggessive dog, fortunately neither dog was harmed. I have to be a better leader.
I have a small P/U truck with ext cab and must figure out a safe way to transport the dog. If I can fabricate the cab, then I could leave the windows open a bit along with the rear sliding window.
Thanks for everyones contributions. Please indulge me because I will post often and mention Lady and Nuke often. I can't help it right now.
Don't they make grates that can go in car windows that are rolled down? how would something like that work? does anyone know how secure those things are?
