These babies are just tons of fun. The heifer is really a character. When we let them out to graze, she kicks up her heels and runs like a mustang, just gittin' it, as fast as she can go. Ever seen a barrel horse right out of the gate getting up to speed? That's what she looks like! After she gets that out of her system, she will actually rub her face and neck on the grass and everything but actually roll. The bull is Mr. Itchy. He wants to scratch on everything he can find. I brought out the big slicker loop and went to work on him with it; he was in heaven.
Those are some nice stout calves! Sunburnt(red) is good, they'll be less hot in July then they would be if they were totally black.
Beef bulls are not "tough" for quite awhile IME. He will rub his head in the dirt more than she does, try to push stuff over. After you wean (or before) you could have him castrated, it's really not a big deal, anaesthesia is really not required. That way you could keep him until he is big enough to preform heat detection for you, which would allow you to have your heifer bred AI, to a bull who throws small calves.
Bulls and steers are "nicer" actually than heifers, who can be wiley and bitchy.
In a few weeks I'd encourage you to lead break your calves. You could tie them while you give them their bottle, then keep them separate for a bit to eat their grain. Halter broken is great to teach while you still outweigh them!
Thanks for the pics-they look like great calves.
Oh, they will definitely be fitted with halters very soon. So nice to have YET ANOTHER set of animals who can freakin' tell time!!! IT'S 8:15 A.M. WHERE'S OUR BOTTLES???????
Some new pics. They are growing like weeds! Probably pushing 200 pounds now. The goats have accepted them as kindred spirits, but unfortunately, the calves now think that you should eat shrubs and tree leaves instead of grass!
