A bench dog, selected for a cheerful willing temperament, who is sound, is really what most people are going to be happiest owning IMO. Successful show dogs can stand crating and they are friendly and calm. Being selected to be a good pet who enjoys handling is a huge genetic plus, not a liability IMO.
Joyce, I bet you could do a lot with the two you have now!
I think I want to see if I can work with my male in agility.
My female is the one who has the higher drive, but she has the partially lame leg from her accident (FCE) so she really can't do more which is a shame.
But Kodi has a good play/ball drive and is a fast learner.
I think he would also like tracking because he loves to play "find it" when we are working inside.

I absolutely love my WGSL dog, he is everything I have ever wanted, good temperament, great show dog and he loves Schutzhund, the helpers say he is one of the hardest hitting, hardest biting showline they have worked with, he has good solid nerves and is absolutely gorgeous, and the best part of all is he comes home to my house and is fantastic with my cats and my little terriers ( terrorists) that terrorize him with rough play, he's gentle as can be, he also goes down the trails with me and my horse for miles on weekends. I got him from
a great breeder in Michigan, Alta-Tollhouse, and will get another one someday, these are far and away my favorite dogs.
my wife has started tracking my time with Pisa, and I average 5 to 6 hours a day and it wants more, plus the time I spend reading and learning from this site(a God sent gift for dog owners)
Not all GSD's have crazy drive. You will find your new pal
I've seen a few mellow working line GSDs that are good pets, not nervy or anything like many showbred ones but mellow in the house. Just don't get a Dutchie!
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
