Random dude at PetsMart today: "Where did you get him trained?"
Me: "I trained him myself"
Random dude: "Oh, he must be old then, he's so calm"
Me: "Actually, he just turned 2 years old last month"
Random dude: "Oh..... ok...." (and walks away shaking his head)
I think he thought I was lying.
This conversation going on while a PetsMart "dog trainer" was trying to get a dog to sit, by tossing on a prong collar, yanking up, as he pushed on the butt of the dog yelling SIT. Promised the owner the dog wouldn't pull in the impossibly oversized prong. Idiot.
I had a guy walk my way that I had never seen before when out on the field running my dogs & doing some OB (most of the 'regulars' see me there all the time & I know them) I pretty much ignored his calling to me until I was ready to take a break & put the dogs in a down stay. (hoping he would go away 'cause I knew what was comming.)
He came up to me & asked me how I taught the dogs to listen so well. I said that they came this way & he looked at me & asked how old they were when I got them...I said 8 weeks old. I smiled & released my dogs & walked away.
Somedays I just get tired of answering the same questions over & over.
I was at Petco a while back & the same kind of training was going on. I can't even watch these so-called trainers anymore. I just want to go to them & smack them on the head & take the dog far away.
I've seen them yanking on young pups..saying that you have to get tuff with them so they know you are the boss & their pack leader. One puppy was so scared it peed & pooped & cowered. The owner didn't know what to do. As I walked by I suggested that there are other places to take your pup for training.
Makes me sick. I feel really bad becasue these poor owners are really trying to get some help with their dogs & this is what they get for their efforts. Sad.
