Thank you all for your advice. I have been placing his ball on the ground and then sending him to it at increasing distances. However, I don't like that the slows as he approaches in order to pick it off the ground--Will's suggestion will be perfect for that, I think, as he could swipe the ball off the little stand without slowing to take it from the ground. I was also worried that I am providing a major cue to the dog by placing the toy each time (I put him in a platz and place the toy). I will start to incorporate placement with the dog off the field and a second ball in my pocket (after a few reps with the ball in place, of course). Faisal, great observation about the drive required after the whole obedience exercise to complete this. I'll try to make it as motivational as possible.
We don't have a formal club where I live (though I belong to a great club in the Province here and train with them when I can) so most of my training is on my own. I appreciate your input.

Will forgot to add the disclaimer that no matter what drive level, this method does not work well with Weasels.
Somehow, and regardless of the amount of witnesses we are not quite sure how, Princess Weasels are able to grab the ball AND grab the invisible hanging tree and bring all back to the vehicle.
She was very speedy in her execution.

OK, I'm clear on most of this (although I would prefer to avoid the Weasel protocol if possible), but can I please get clarity on this :
Hang ball on a string to a clip attached to a thin but strudy metal hanger ( I use a garden pot holder placed sideways, it's black and blends in well )
Send dog from just a few feet away with whatever "go out" command that you use and the dog rewards itself by pulling the ball free.
How is the ball-on-string attached to a garden pot holder (what is a garden pot holder)?

A wire/wraut-iron plant holder. Looks like a candycane or questionmark....except that the elbow is turned facing up not down so the plant can be hung on it. Plant needs to have a hanging rope or wire on it around the pot to hand it up.
Does that make sense?
Ball on a string is usually hung with a clip or or closepin etc that will break away or depending on the dog(& if taught how to take it off) just hung over the plant holder.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
OK, OK, I can picture it now. At least I now have it off the ground (I was picturing a black clay pot lying sideways in the grass.... )

PW would probably grab that too.
I think Shepherd's hook may be the technical term?
You carefully hang the ball so that it (the ball) releases easily....

I didn't dare ask that. Thank you for the clarification. I have the hooky thing from an indoor plant mounted on a window casing. I see that I can put the ball-string precariously over the hook's tip, or maybe use a very loose plastic clothespin to attach the ball-string.
Gettin' closer.
(I remember sobbing when we used to have to use booklets and diagrams to put together stereo components. )

Isabelle,
Maybe putting the ball up at the end of the field before you start ( just keep your dog towards the other end of the field and have a second ball, of course ) while your dog is kenneled or in the car will help with that little problem. Glad that it's mostly working out though, way to go!

That was yet another training day that Betty struck me speechless......
