Joyce,
My son handles all of our internet, networking, security, and all computer related things. He is strongly opposed to all things wireless including mouses (mice?). I have been lectured about war driving, whenever I suggest we go wireless. I don't know how they do it. But, I was told that Google was gathering computer information in some instances when they were doing mapping. We probably have about 10 computers. So, we have wires all over the place ... fun with a puppy. It is annoying, however, he has 2 degrees in computer science and is writing his dissertation for a PhD in computer information systems. I hope that eventually encryption will set me free but for now I am wired.

Wow! Thank you Mary for that insight! Your son would certainly know best, with his multiple degrees in computer science and writing his dissertation in information systems! Very important stuff, thanks for sharing this info, I really appreciate it!
I think I have my answers, so thank you to everyone!
David, sorry the post was so long,I just had a question about this device someone was scanning through my friends neighborhood.
Not knowing what it was. But now it appears to definitely be a case of someone trying to look for vulnerable computers to hack into.

Have you ever had one of those "duh" moments. I just did. I thought the question was the first post on page two. That's because I didn't see there was a page one. A mind is a terrible thing - - -

I don't think they were wardriving. I can't see where the red laser light would come from that. Most wardriving is done with just a laptop. Any external antenna would look just like a radio antenna.
My first thought was that it was some kind of tool that detected motion sensors and the like to see what houses in the neighborhood had security systems.

You have a good point here Michael, I was kind of wondering the same thing. My friend had said she thought the device was doing something to read the codes on everyone's key pad garage door openers.
She has since changed every one of their codes, but hard to know what they were doing, if they were not wardriving.
I am not very tech savy at all, but you make an interesting point Michael. I have no idea what that red light was in this device. I called it a laser light, but I truly have no clue?

Yep, sadly, I have those moments more and more as I get older!
Ever walk into a room and wonder what you came in there for?
Have you ever walked out of the room, only to turn the light on before you leave it, instead of turning it off?
All too familiar occurrences in this house!
I would like to believe it is because I am so busy and have too much going on at one time.....at least that is the excuse I use to make myself feel less of a scatterbrain!

Being an Ex hacker and security contractor my self. I would say it was a IR beam either for wifi or for access to either alarm systems or they were trying to circumvent garage doors.
I'm not sure how many of you do this but my wife and I monitor all cars in our neighborhood. We've done this since we moved here about a year ago. It's very very helpful to know who doesn't belong. I also have personally experienced a 20 minute wait after calling 911 for the police. A guy was trying to break into my neighbors home while they were asleep. He was trying to kick in the front door. Some how they NEVER heard him or knew he was there when I asked the next day. I yelled at him "HEY! get the F out of there I have a GUN!!" and he ran off.
The police finally showed up and said he was running from them and to keep a lookout. My main point and a point that I keep hearing from friends of mine that are cops.. "Carry your gun if you can because we are so understaffed"
This is in Springfield IL which has over 110k of people
