Ashley, thanks for sharing your experience with a vest, it's nice to hear that someone actually had good results! What you're saying about the working dog patch was what I was originally thinking. Then I started wondering if other people would see it the same way. Thanks for giving your perspective!
Jack, I never knew that Ireland had such a strong current of anti-dog sentiment. It'd be nice to think that you could change people's attitudes through good experiences with you and your dog, but that's probably a bit too optimistic. Btw, I think Leerburg sells vests with a "Pet me, I'm friendly" patch (or something similar). Good luck with all those anti-dog people.

I got a dark blue vest for my dog for the same reason. Everyone was SO interested in him and ALWAYS wanted to pet him. It's really annoying when you're trying to walk your damn dog and some jack ass comes up to you (with their dog no less!) and is like "AWWW ajefhaeihf so pretty can i pet?".
My vest doesn't say anything on it, but people still recognize it as a service vest or something because I don't have this problem anymore. Except when he doesn't have it on. Then I have to tell them no, or just look like homicidal or something.
You know what I hate even more then people trying to pet your dog? The ones that whistle and try to call and get his attention. Or pet the dog behind your back, literally.

Ed sells some vests, they work with adults but kids are another story. I got one that says "Working Dog in Training, Do Not Pet"

Dannielle, exactly! I always think "how is it not obvious to you that I'm doing something here?" And/or "Does this really look like a good time to try to set up your dog on a 'playdate'?" And as much as I know that whistling or calling to the dog is a great training opportunity, it still annoys the hell out of me. Guess it should be easy to work on my homicidal face.
Dennis, those are some of the vests I'm looking at. I was considering the mesh one because my girl is coated and our area is pretty warm for most of the year.
It's good to hear that both of you have had positive experiences with vests (and seriously, thank you for posting to let me know. I really appreciate it). What I'm getting is pretty much what Mara said, it depends on the people in your area. I'm leaning toward getting the vest and crossing my fingers. If it doesn't work, well, we move fairly regularly. Maybe we'll luck out elsewhere.

I started thinking it would be an awesome distraction, but there needs to be an off switch. My dog isn't really at the distractions phase yet, he's still learning, so of course he's going to want to see what's going on.
Also, if you put a muzzle on your dog, that's a 99% guarantee they will leave you alone. I was gonna say 100%, but then I remembered the moron at the gas station...
Anyway, I've found it depends on the area I'm in. When I'm walking King around my neighborhood, it's 50/50. If I'm out around town, and he's got his vest, it's about 90% (there's always those persistent adults and annoying kids), but if I'm at the park or the mall, forget it. I've got to constantly ward people off.
Just like everyone else is saying, depends on the crowd. If there's a side of town that you know of that's a little less busy or some sort of retirement town (like mine has), it could be less distracting. The quieter side of town isn't that bad.
Hope the vest works for you!

Amazing that a muzzle and an affirmative answer to "does he bite" aren't enough to stop some people.
I'll try the vest in different areas, like you say, and see how people respond. I'm actually kinda looking forward to that for some reason. Curiosity, I guess.
Thanks!

I was just appalled that she asked, after I told her YES, he bites. (Which, in reality, he'll only do if you're wearing a jute sleeve, he's an extraordinarily friendly dog)
Let us know how the vest works out for you!

I can't imagine how I would respond to that if I had been in your shoes. Absolutely ridiculous.
Looking forward to giving the vest a try!

I just tell people no if they ask. I don't get too many requests though. The trainer at our local petsmart always seems to want to pet Hokie or play with him (probably because he is awesome). I would think she would know better =\
I DO like to pet other peoples dogs though BUT I always ask and am fine with them saying no. Generally I only ask if they are small cute dogs anyway though, and most of the owners say yes.

The trainers at PetsMart/PetCo are the WORST Michael! They always try and say hi to Koe, (he does not wear a vest) but will ask him in this silly high pitched voice to 'Sit????' Koenig looks at them like they are stupid. Stop asking my dog to do things! (then of course they assume he does not know how to sit, and try to 'help' me teach him)
