He's doing well. Barking in the blind, just started blind searches. I got lucky- he's a rescue. Unfortunatly when I first got him I went to a trainer that applied too much pressure, too fast, on a young dog. (he's only 2) We're with a good club now, and have contact with several EXCELLENT trainers/clubs in my area. He's been worked on both right and left handed helpers, and generally works on a trial sleeve.
Here is a short video of his protection work. It's 2 months old... he's come quite a ways since this video, I just don't have anything more recent. This is also our 1st or 2d time out with this club, so both the TD and helper were getting a feel for him. That was the first runaway bite they had given him, and the 'holy $hit!' was from the TD. lol.
Koenig is my first 'real' dog, so please forgive all my handler errors... I'm learning! We no longer pee on the field. I don't let him get dirty in the blind... as much... darn strong dog...
great job I'm not saying it's wrong rather than pick up the sleeve. i would kick the sleeve back to the helper i've seen handler's bit when they pit up the sleeve. keep up the good work
If I kick, my swinging foot is more likely to get nailed then my hand picking it up.
Since that video we've switched to a agitation collar, and we now have a carry, as opposed to a 'drop and kill it'. With the help of a visiting helper (Marty Leggett) we gave Koenig an 'off' switch on the field, and moved his bark and hold much much closer. We had some awesome work that day.
He is not switching between prey and defense. I mean when the helper is in prey the dog is still barking and lunging. Hopefully the trainer knows and is aware while moving forward with training (B&H with a tight line and all).
