There are about to be serious changes in the VA service dog rules. You may want to get your congressman and senator involved as well as your own letter writing as the comment window is closing rapidly.

I think the VA is wanting to broaden the ability for Vets and Service Dogs, since they have become so valuable. We do receive compensation for vet bills, dog purchase, and training.
If you go through the application process to the Veterans K9 Corp, you have to wait two years before you get a dog tailored to you. It is a very involved application and lengthy wait for the dog.
To obtain a service dog, you need a CONSULT from your primary care physician. Then you need to get a dog and file with the VA for benefits. I am going through this process now. Good thing is that once you file for the benefits, they are retroactive to the date of filing.
Many vets are turning to DIY since the wait for a do is so long. I hope they will eventually have a club for Veterans Service Dogs here. That would be very cool.
