Great topic.
I've been giving this issue some thought recently since Oscar turned 6 in March, and he has virtually no grey muzzle hairs (save for some sparse ones on the underside of his chin... I was thinking it could partly be because he's been properly raw fed since he was 1... but there's no way of knowing how much genes factor in.
I know he'll grey as he continues to age - not looking forward to that reminder of his lifespan - raw diet or not, but I'm so glad he doesn't look prematurely frosty (I know a number of (kibble fed) dogs who started greying at around 2!). For now, he just ACTS like an old codger - walking at a good snail's pace, laying down to soak up the sun every chance he gets...

PS
Which issue of WDJ is this in? The last one addressing causes of fur changes that I recall was in 2007 or 2008, called (I think) "Hair of the Dog."
Is it new?
Joyce, do you remember which one you read it in? I was in a hospital waiting room, of all places. I don't know what year the one that I read was. I wish I had looked now. I do remember this guy saying something about a lack of zinc causing early greying.
The article was at the place I work. I am off for a couple days, but I will look when I go in and let you know as soon as I find out.
I just looked through my back issues and didn't see it. But I have only subscribed for a little over a year.
This one may be an older issue.
The zinc deficiency is an interesting point. But aren't raw diets very plentiful in zinc? I thought raw meat was high in zinc. Connie or anyone know if this is true?

Thor is 11.5 and has not greyed. Do you think it's because he's all white?

one of my friend dog is now 13, just starting to grey and has been on the cheap food (dog chow) all her life. She sure is stiff but not much grey yet.

Jerk! :P lol.
I've had dogs begin to grey as early as 4, personally. Hell. I'm only 27, and I've got grey.

My parent's PWD is 7 years old with no grey and ate the same crap food (pedigree) my childhood terrier ate...she grayed out completely at about 1.5 years (though I distinctly remember someone mentioning that was due to us clipping rather than stripping her...)
I'm curious what Ryuk's going to look like with a frosty muzzle...but I hope it doesn't show up for a white....

My male GSD has been raw fed since weaning, minimally vaccinated, and he already had quite a bit of grey when I got him as a 2 year old:
Dutch 2 years
Now, at 5 years old, his whole bottom jaw is grey:
Dutch 5 years
I still think he's handsome though

I'll believe genetics over diet any day. I have dogs that didn't start to grey until they were in the double digits, but neither did their parents. I have other dogs that have started to grey at 3 and 4 years old, and guess what, so did their parents :-) It could be argued that is because I owned the parents also, so the diet was the same, but I would counter that with the fact that I do change foods for different dogs, and over the years, and I've seen the same thing in their offspring I didn't raise, who were in completely different environments, with different diets.
I've also see the same patterns in how they grey, Mac's feet turned grey long before I saw any grey on his muzzle. And his daughter Kita is doing the same now, I'm seeing hints of grey in her feet, but her muzzle is still clear.
I'm sure diet could play a factor, just like stress, overall health, etc but to say it's only diet related IMO is incorrect.
