I was posting on the cattle prod thread and then realized this might be a separate topic:
No Jenny, you're dead on that this is a continuation of the 'cattle prod" thread - if we all carried cattle prods and would use them on out-of-control dogs ( and their owners ) , the world would be a safer and more polite world.
And I'm completely serious here.
I'm not sure where you are at Jenny, in terms of what is expected of dog owners, or if they can do anything they think is reasonable. But the park I was at has supposed strict rules that NO dog is off leash. I cannot even walk the trail at that particular park with the dog, I have to stay in the non-trail areas. What I can guarantee though, is that if I let my rottie off leash to have a frolic at the park, there would be all kinds of ruckus. And he is friendly.
I wouldn't THINK of going to a dog park, even keeping my dog on a leash. That would be a really silly idea, i think. But I think if there are a lot of people using this place AS a dog park it might continue to be frustrating. Kind of like trying to take a walk at my house. :-)
I was walking outside a local, large dog park the other day. A gal was walking her dog into the park, and let her pup, a very social pitty type, charge up to Koenig. I backed him up (he was in a formal heel at the time, so we just backed) and told him to 'leave it' when he wanted to look/sniff at the dog IN HIS FACE.
The owner got all huffy/pissed off with me. "So he's not dog-friendly, and you bring him to a DOG PARK?" Well, no. He's OK with other polite dogs. I'm not IN the dog park, and my dog is under control, training under distractions. I don't feel a need to let him socialize with your dog. So :P. She stormed off, with her out of control dog, and went to pester someone else. lol.
I love this board, was beginning to think I just had it all wrong and was being dog snobbish by not wanting strange dogs to "socialize" with mine.
You all are the GREATEST.
I carry pepper spray and if I ever need to use it to break up a fight, I'll be sure the owner gets a whiff too. If I have to go to jail over an unleashed, out of control dog, gonna make it count.
