Complain, complain!
You folks do know that with each dog comes a pound of those very special coffee beans that have to be crapped out by an Asian civet cat.
I'm going to depart from the party line on this one.
About everyone could rattle off the names of five or six dogs in their club/dept/training group that probably have better protection skills than the dog in the article.
That's not the point of this dog. She's a pretty, V-rated female that can kind of grab a sleeve. She won't go off on the help, visiting kids or someone else who would sue and win big $$ for being nipped by the 'attack dog'. The guy can brag about the 'secret word' to turn the dog on and of. He may well get some recurring training for the quarter megabuck. He can brag about how much that dog cost and maybe even show off her biting a sleeve -- for the non-working dog people, that can look pretty impressive.
When the chips are down, she may bark enough or even bite enough to draw the attention of the **real** security people who are likely on site. If the guy is tossing 250 large around on a 'protection' dog, he may well have staff on site to handle baddies.
In the meantime, the dog has hit the canine PowerBall -- she won't be living her life out on a cold, hard kennel floor pumping out puppy after puppy, or tied to a bumper in someone's back yard. She is likely being loved to death and pampered to the nth degree if she travels with her family. She probably has a better medical plan than most of us could ever dream of.
Like Will has often said, most people don't really need a full-blown PPD. A dog that can raise a ruckus will likely meet most of their real needs. This dog probably hits that target. The vendor is selling to his customer's real needs not his perceptions.
Some friends were once offered a rather stupid amount of money for their young, V-rated SchH3 male.
He was one of those show dogs that could bite for real. She wanted a dog that could ride with them on their boat ( a rather big one ...), look good and bark as needed. There are a lot of people out there with that need and the money to back it up. To them, a $100k for a dog is like $100 to the rest of us.
Charlie, I see what you're saying, but I wouldn't be able to sleep at night selling a $7500 dog to some sucker for 100k, it is dishonest to the core.
I guess for me it's the double whammy, I hate stupidity and dishonesty, and that news article reeks of both in mega amounts.
