Hey Cheri – if you go to the second link that Kelly posted and type in your zip code you’ll see the caches hidden around your area. There is actually two hidden down on our beach, which is in walking distance for us. We were at a camping area so we just entered the location we were at.
I’ll bet you’ll be surprised at how close some are. I haven’t checked the city areas around us but from what Kelly is saying, they’re right in towns too.
Thanks. I will check out that link. I'm sure you can drive as far as you want, of course. I'm just hoping to find some stuff locally, say within a half hour's drive. Much more and it starts to get expensive, gas-wise. I do love to get out and walk around in nature, so it sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

One of the best spots to hide a cache in the city is a lamppost/streetlight. The metal 'cover' at the top of the cement base (3' off the ground or so?) often are not attached, and slide up. Perfect place to hide a 'micro' cache- size of a 35mm film canister.
I live in the city- we've got 5 caches within walking distance. You're local mall/towncenter is likely to have MANY caches! The city hides are not nearly as fun, IMO, as searching for something in the woods/wilderness, but hey, thats just me.

Holy cow, I just checked the link Kelly provided. There are numerous parks in my area that I often go to, and they all appear to be full of geo-caches! I love to hike in the woods, and my husband loves (I mean looovvvveeesss) his GPS, so this looks like something we would both enjoy, and the dogs can come along, too!

Super, even more so than the google sites indicated. Kind of puts some human-ness back into the world, minus the muggles.
I was going to start some nose work games with female dog, but I've been putting it off. I think this shall be our 'thing', hope to try it out this weekend or next

I have not asked Koenig to search out and hides- since we're working twords footstep tracking SchH style, I don't want to confuse him, and let him learn air scenting is OK.
He generally gets to blast around like an idiot while we're hunting for a cache, so he has plenty of fun.
Look out. It's addicting!
My favorite part is you don't HAVE to own a nice GPS. Richard has a fantastic one, but I rarely carry it. BUT.... I've got an iPhone, and there is a GeoCaching.com app for it. Also one out there for every other type of smartphone. So, if you've got a nice-ish phone, you're all set! Get onto the http://www.geocaching.com website and register, and download the app. You're ready to go join the rest of us, looking for hidden tupperwear in the woods.

Yeah, Sch isn’t in Vince’s future and there’s no tracking in the BH so we just play with tracks in fields and we’ve done quite a few in the bush too. His nose isn’t down the entire time but I keep him at a slower pace and he knows what we’re doing now.
Totally backyard stuff with no goal in mind other than to teach him to use what he was given. So he’s good to go on helping me find treasure.
When you select a particular cache to find, does it tell you what the theme is, or is it just hit or miss? I'd love to do this with my son, so I'd be more interested in ones that a kid might find fun.
And Lynne I have no idea how you tell what’s what. Maybe Kelly can answer that one too.

Lynne, I just saw CJ mention you, and had no idea what she was talking about. Somehow I missed your entire post. Whoops. I loose.
There will be a short and long description, and they'll tell you what the theme (if any) is.
For example,
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC120DW
That's a link to a local cache that my son found on his own. Boy, was he excited to see it filled with bugs and lizards. Many don't have a theme, and you'll just find random loot in it, like CJ's cache.
You don't need a GPS, have a smart phone?

Hah!
My cell phone is decidedly 'un Smart', so I'm going to look into a cheap GPS. This sound like a lot of fun.

I have never heard of geocaching till this thread ... So I checked out the site, geocaching.com, downloaded their app to my iPad, and was surprised to see that there are about 7 or 8 caches right in my neighbourhood, all right on my regular walking routes!
I'm checking them out starting now... I can see really getting into this whenever and wherever hubby and I go rv'ing. In fact, we go down to Quartzsite, AZ every winter and there are plenty out in the desert there, as well.
IMO this is right up there with random acts of kindness and flash mobs as one of the coolest, unselfish things humans do
