Does anyone have any ideas for ways to straighten the heeling using INDUCTIVE methods (i.e. no force)? It would be nice if the dog realized that straight was what I wanted because I think she would do it if she understood.
Just an idea here.... I had the same problem with manipulation of the dogs body while in the heel position, but I was also holding the ball in my RIGHT hand on my LEFT shoulder.... Try switching the leash into your right hand and hold the ball up with the left
You can then manipulate the position of the dog by moving the ball to line her up and drop it when she is straight. I was trying to do too much right handed and when my TD pointed it out things started to work better.
Just a thought.... no force involved <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
If I were you I would forget about heeling in a straight line for a while. Ellen was on the right track when she suggested heeling in a left arc. My suggestion is to heel in your dog in a circle, moving in the left-hand direction--you can tighten or widen the circle as needs be. Don't use the leash while you do that, you don't need a leash at all when you teach heeling with a ball. Even though you would normally hold your ball in your left hand, this time hold it in your right, but extend your arm as far as you can so the ball is under your left arm. With your left hand, gently pat your dog's butt into the correct position, even if it's already OK while telling her what a good girls she is--talk to her, she'll understand what you want. The most important thing is to be FAST and animated.
Thanks everyone... I have been heeling in left arcs since the beginning of the problem and it helps a little... but it seems that ball position is a big issue... still experimenting but having some success by placing it as far to my left shoulder as possible.
Eye contact earns my dogs the reward. Not looking at the ball
This is such an important concept to understand. Bernard Flinks calls this making a deal with the dog. You do ... and I will let you play with my ball.
