I think that it will boost his confidence and self-esteem.
Here in lies the problem. I think it is great you are considering ways to work with your dog and use his skills. What about bite work do you see as beneficial to him?
Maybe it would help you to have him evaluated and get some suggestions based on his evaluation of what venues would accomplish building his confidence and self esteem.
Well thank you for all the great advice. Much like will said which has been the most sinking in information is that I am trying to assign human behaviors in canines which don't exist. And all the other information was great as well. Im glad that I talked here first before like others have said, I'd lose money to an eager trainer who doesn't care.
I know of a lot of people that take their dog through agility training to boost the dog's confidence. Agility also deepens the bond between owner and dog because you work as a team. It's a lot of fun, and MUCH harder than it looks
Agility was a godsend for Kira. She was a very slow to mature and somewhat reserved pup. She blossomed during agility and still loves it at over 5 years old. She truly comes alive.
Also, this is a young dog you are talking about who you have only had for a few months. What training have you done with him up to this point?
I suspect you are putting the cart before the horse, so to speak.
And if you do not have it, I highly recommend purchasing the Michael Ellis "Power of Training Dogs with Food" DVD.
So far as training I have started small. He had basic obedience down however on his terms. No without question when given a command he follows through and follows up with a reward wheather a traininng treat, only praise word something marking his good behavior. I have been able to train to heal which needs work, wait, pull on tug, circle as the turn around word when going on our walks and its time to head back. Home, for the surrounding aread of the yard and the porch when coming into drive on walks or heading in from the woods to the house. And I have taught hand signals for each and for the most part not a word has to be spoken. The most thing that I have been spending time on is come. Drop everything, every thought and come to me. See I live in the mountains on 15 acres and any time of the day a pack of deer can come through and so on and he thinks their toys lets go get them daddy. So come isn't firm yet with distractions like that.
