And how do I get to know the dog when we are all ignoring him? that's part of my question.
Again, for me (although this won't be universal), I might set aside the DVD (a great one, IMO) for a bit, practice NILIF, and see what you have. JMO.
You have watched it enough to get the gist of being pretty aloof right now, right? And NILIF? And not getting down on the floor for wrestling, etc.?
Hi Chris, and welcome to the board. I'm going to go on record as agreeing completely with Connie's statement here. This is JMO, but I believe a little bit of gentle, quiet attention from you and your family is not going to hurt anything.
NILIF and marker training are going to take you a long ways with this dog, I believe, and you've come to the right place for advice on both of those methods.
I would also say that I, too, believe it is way too early to allow your seven-year-old son to hold the leash when out on walks -- though I completely understand your desire and his desire to do so. It's going to take some time before that will be a safe thing to do. I believe a 35-pound dog could easily pull a seven-year-old off his feet!
Congratulations on the new addition to your family, and how wonderful that you chose to rescue a dog from the shelter.
