One of mine (the Leo) is a blood donor. We started doing it after my GSD needed numerous units of blood and plasma several years ago following bloat surgery.
Our local blood bank requires females to be spayed and never been pregnant. No restriction on male dogs. No diet restriction. Also, no dog that has ever received donated blood can be a donor.
With our local program the benefits of being a donor are many, in addition to just doing a good deed. Donor dogs receive free annual bloodwork, free blood products for the donor dog (and any other dogs in the household) should they ever need it, and 10% off emergency vet services.

These are the two general healthy-dog prohibitions that make sense to me, so far, in what I'm reading (and again, the females with pregnancy history or pregnancy possibility thing is still controversial).
Also, I looked at many sets of requirements -- didn't see one for males being neutered.

I called the Ontario Veterinary College about their donor program this morning. They have a year long wait list but I went ahead and faxed Sasha's application in anyways. I figure if she's accepted, she'll be 2 years old and the timing will be good.
The application did ask if your dog is raw fed but didn't ask about them being spayed or neutered.
The College is quite generous with their perks for donors. Free Heartworm testing, heartworm meds June to November, nail trim, annual check of blood, urine, feces for abnormalities/parasites and a physical exam by a vet tech. For each donation, you also get an 8 lb bag of food and a bag of dog treats.

.... There was some research I saw a couple of years ago that concluded that dogs with histories of pregnancies can safely be blood donors. I don't remember where I read it; I remember it was kind of a small study.
If someone bumps this, I can find the material tomorrow.
I found this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19645833

Until they find out she's already 156 lbs at a year old. I'm not even going to think about what she'll weigh a year from now. They may not want to do the meds for us.

Ok, so they have said it is too hard on the recipients body to have the hormones from the intact dogs blood transfused into their body? The example given was, if I bring my intact male in and he smells a female in heat, then has a testosterone spike, then they draw blood chalked full of testosterone, then have to give that to a speutered dog, it will cause his body undue stress to process the hormones? Any truth here?
And that intact females are prone to anemia so they are not good blood donors?
Anyways - either way, I am pretty much done asking questions because no one can give me a straight, honest answer. Its their loss really

"And that intact females are prone to anemia so they are not good blood donors?"
Actually, I think this is valid. I forgot about this because I was thinking of that pregnancy-induced alloantibodies issue.
I've read that the red blood cell count of a pregnant dog may drop considerably (like 25%) in the last weeks.
Also, I think I have read (don't quote me on this one; it's a vague memory) that older intact females are indeed at higher risk for anemia.
