This technique worked really for Calvin and Hobbes.....First I worked with Calvin by himself as he always tries to look back to see where I am. ... I also thought it would increase his confidence on walking ahead of me while he's wearing his harness. He did well but still needs work ....
Maybe I'll have them "parade ready" by fall. I hope so at least.
Sounds as though you have found a way of utilizing the long reining and have now got a great tool there. The confidence part of walking ahead in harness very much applies to the horses as well. Trainers who like this technique will use it a great deal not just for youngsters but also for fine tuning, for improving their relationship between handler and horse and for when the horse has lost fitness and is not ready to hitch because of that. On an advanced horse the technique of long reining can produce incredible dressage movements.
