Careful about those beaches. Sand, bare feet and dog crap is a combination that could get you in bad favor with the regular beach goers.
True! So with all these great ideas of places to go, things to do with our dogs, we all have to be extra careful to be responsible owners and pick up after them, and to follow the posted rules, leash laws, etc. That's one way to help ensure dogs won't be banned from our favorite places.
Lots of the suggestions here involve dogs in close proximity with members of the public. I know the regular members here are aware of this, but since this is a public forum, I think it's important to stress being absolutely sure that your dog is non-reactive in public, with either humans or other animals they may encounter. Introduce them to new situations or activities slowly and carefully. And of course always be conscious of your dog's safety, as well.

Great thread! Let me add one to the list. I take my dogs to playground where there are extensive sets of playground equipment. It's a great poorman's version of doing agility as long as you make sure other kids aren't using the equipment and the equipment isn't too cold or wet where it's not safe. Our Mal loves going up climbing walls, through some of the more modest tunnel slides, up steps, and across ramps. She gets a great workout. Now I can't walk pass a playground where she doesn't eye it up and whine if we don't go.

Oh yeah ditto on the playground stuff. Logan loves climbing on them and I have him jump through the gap of these narrow poles (over a 3ft step ladder) where the overhead bars are...there's also a moving/rocking platform I make him go over, an a-frame ramp, he jumps through the swings, and I need to finish showing him how to safely climb the metal bar ladders, he almost had it.
I'd so love to push his butt through the spiral tunnel but I won't. I wonder if I could convince him to let me hold him and go together...na. LOL

We have some wonderful places we can go near us for beaches and mountain trails. But... we have a reactive dog, and he is unpredictable. His recall is getting better, but not enough to compete with the peaks of high arousal that can happen in the wild places. He is just 2 years old now, and I fear he is not getting enough (any) off leash time. We are in the middle of a huge renovation, and that doesn't help because our yard is full of excavation soil and building materials.
Any suggestions on ways to give a reactive dog that free run feeling (while keeping everyone safe)?

RV camping is great fun with dogs. We've done it all over the U.S.
Closer to home, we like day trips to State Parks. We've also got some nice large municipal parks that we hike in often.
My dogs think a trip to Sonic is a fun outing.

Oh my little girl Sport used to LOVE going to get icecream on her birthday. I used to go to the DQ drive through and get a cup of plain icecream...one time they even put a dog biscuit in it...she spit that out quite disgusted LOL.

I am reading all these wonderful posts and wondering what the readers of the British Dog Magazine would make of this list! I can't help but think that they would be fascinated by all of this! It would make a really great e-book with accompanying photos!!
One of our favourite "outings" was the 2200km trip between Ontario and Nova Scotia that we used to make twice a year. Our dogs love road trips! There was something special about the close proximity and engagement that we had on our trips. The dogs would settle into the routine of driving and then stop for a great walk or hike, always different of course, a picnic lunch and then an afternoon nap in the van. They understood the routine for the overnight at a motel too and were never any trouble at all. I quite miss those trips with all the dogs! It makes me smile to think of them though.

If you're ever in Flagstaff, Arizona, you can take your dog to the book store! There is a wonderful, huge used book store (and other media) called, of all things, Bookman's, and they allow well-mannered dogs inside the store. They have other locations in AZ, but I can't speak to whether they all allow dogs.

One of the places we go to let our dogs stretch their legs off leash is our local high school. They have some athletic fields that are used for track and field weight events (hammer, discus) and baseball practice that are completely enclosed by chain link fence. We go on a Sunday or Saturday mornings and do long fetches with our ChuckIt toys. Being fenced in, we can control her roamings and can also see if anyone approaches so we can quickly get her back on leash if needed. Half hour of that followed by a good 2-3 mile walk and she's pretty mellow the rest of the day.

Since I've been taking my dog RV'ing I've been discovering all the places dogs are NOT allowed in the US that I was unaware of before, and it's very frustrating... we had to abandon plans on almost every stop on our route.
Redding Sundial Bridge - no dogs allowed.
Joshua Tree Nat. Forest - no dogs allowed on trails
Death Valley - no dogs allowed on trails
Tucson Mt. Park - - no dogs allowed
Saguaro Nat. park - no dogs allowed on trails
Tucson Estates neighborhood where our friends live -no dog walking on roads!!!
Desert Museum in Tucson - Illegal to leave pet unattended in RV (even in Winter) in Pima county.
Boondocking in Quartzsite, AZ - yay! Finally no rules.
Seriously, I find travelling in the US to be extremely un-dog friendly. Am I the only one?
