My 5 month old male DS is a fighter, not a lover. I had issues with him flipping out and going into fight mode every time I tried to control his body (any type of holding or body manipulation). It didn't last long though, I'd get him held until he submitted, then give him a little doggy massage while he held still and stayed calm.
Now every time he greets me, he sits down, and when I go to pet him he flops on his back for a rub.
The hind leg must be extended. The vessel is near the hock, you can see it easily in a fine coated short haired dog. It looks like a worm under the skin passing over the tendon that runs on the outside of the thigh, going toward the hock. The vessel is not surrounded by muscle as in the front leg.
The dog cannot sit, and he must not thrash about. The vessel is wiggly.
Check it out some night while the dog is sleeping and you are watching TV.

Edit reason: vessel crosses tendon not joint
