I always yell out "can you call your dog please"
and if the dog listens than i know they have some control, if the dog just keeps coming, or if the person just stands there yelling "Fido...come! COME!!" I know it's up to me and I start my little dance of distraction!!
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

People can be stupid, I stop taking my dogs to public parks long ago. Erika was attacked TWICE in one day. The last time she was attacked by a Dachshund. She grabbed him by the collar and slung him towards the lack. looked like a doggy baton twirling thru the air.
I feel your pain. My neighbors are some of the most irresponsible dog owners ever. They have a Dachshund who barks non-stop, which can be heard for miles, every morning day and night. They never keep it on leash when going to or from their car, so there were several times that it ran over into my yard barking and snaring at the GSD I had at the time. I would always try to step in between, but it didn't always work out as my GSD was doing his best to pull me at it and swallow it whole. (Quite often I only had a flat lead on him when playing in the back yard).
So... what do these people do? They went out and bought another one. Now there are two of them.

A few weeks aho this moronic lady pulled up next the the field where I was with Logan, open the door to her car and out went and HUGE pit/ABD type dog dashing around all over, NO LEASH, NO COLLAR. I yelled at her while gathering my stuff GET YOUR DOG!!!!! She just looked like huh? GET YOUR ****ing DOG NOW!!! She must have finally seen my dog standing behind me, or maybe I sounded psycho enough, she got her dog to her and put it in the car and hauled it out of there. WTF?
If it came charging, I likely would have tossed Logan over the 6ft fence I was next to and hoped it was friendly to people.
*sigh* are they stupider or lazier?

I know I've said this a lot, but I'm saying again that the "behind me" command that Bob Scott told me how to teach has stood us in very good stead.
It's something we practice fairly often, like the recall, to keep it fast and automatic.
Fantastic! I am going to teach him this! Should be fairly easy as he knows PLACE (between my legs).
Thanks, Connie!

I do think they are just stupid. Maybe I am a little more sensitive because my dog is a maniac and would harm another dog in a split second; but my past dogs, even off leash would never take off on me. And I certainly would not scream, 'my dog is friendly!' - I'd haul my arse over there and punish my dog for not listening to me.

Connie- can you give some more details on teaching that behind me command- especially with multiple dogs involved (3 relatively larger dogs for me).
I've seen some people use a ski pole or stick to help guide/maintain position of the dogs. I don't want my skijor dogs to be skittish about ski poles at all, but I'd be curious how this might work.

I have to chime in here. I am training my 5 month old GSD. One of the parks I go to allows LEASHED dogs and there are lots of kids and parents playing on swings so I consider it to be a pretty safe place.
Today, I see a older man with FOUR off-leashed dogs. Two labs, two goldens walking the perimeter. I will admit, they were following him pretty well.
I couldn't take the chance of 4 vs. my 1 puppy, so I stayed in the car with Ramsey until he left. On one of his loops around the park, he smiles and says" Why take your dog to the park if you're not going to walk him?" I told him I would not take the chance with his 4 dogs off-leash. He tells me "Oh they're fine, no problem!"
How can he be sure? No way would I take that chance!!! Idiot!

This kind of thing has happened to me and mine more times than I can even remember. I also use the "sit stay behind" me while I deal with the offending dog. And, agree that a "down stay behind" is an invitation to escalate the situation by putting my dog in a more submissive position to the other dog. It also seems to me that the more times I handle this problem, the more the dog seems to trust me to be able to defend him/her and therefore, more willing to comply.
I personally do not care what anyone else thinks ... my dog's safety comes first. If they don't handle their dog, I will.
And, in my experience, stupid and lazy are not mutually exclusive, but, rather seem to enhance each other.

I think it is so inconsiderate, once you made your statement to him, for him to not put his dogs on leash so you could also enjoy the park. People suck.

That works the other way, also. People always seem to want to let their dog "meet" mine, but she'll act friendly, then attack without notice. I think it's a huge mistake to let a dog approach another dog that they don't know.
Recently, my sister-in-law met Sadie for the first time, and loved her. She said "We should let Sadie meet Roxanne (her Siberian Husky)." I told her that would be a mistake, and she said "Oh Roxanne's not like that." She was shocked when I said "Yeah, but Sadie is."
Carol, if Ramsey would've bit one of his dogs, he'd have been upset with YOU. Good decision.
