I can only fit my crates so far in to the car, without them being close to any kind of edge. Danni was maybe 3 inches from the rear when I was hit and I'm not even sure she noticed. It's hard to fit blinds, crates, a duffle bag, a water jug and my own stuff even though my car is pretty large. I figure if it's going to be bad accident, it doesn't really matter where the crate is. I don't like her so close to the back, but since I've been hit from the back with little damage I don't feel as nervous about it anymore. They're usually in Varikennels. I've seen a dog fall out of a van inside a Varikennel and neither the crate or the dog were injured, lol.
This is all great information and something to think about. Living in the country my car preparations are generally "get in" and that's it. I could do a better job of keeping all of us safe on the road.
I've been trying to find a "divider." Apparently my terminology and search skills are lacking...Anyone have information on sites/stores which carry them?
As for restraining a dog in a vehicle, I've been hesitant to do that with a highly reactive dog. Yes...I'm taking chances not restraining but there's solid, good reasons why I don't (a few) but won't bore you with them.

I really want to get some locked window barriers for my rear windows. With the windows down all the way someone could easily open Conan's crate and take him out, along with just unlocking the door. I don't ever leave them all the way down if I'm not in the car, but even 1/3 way down someone could throw anything they want in front of or maybe even in Conan's crate. Even if it's not anything that'll hurt one of them (Danni is harder to access) I don't need people messing with my dogs. But I'd like to be able to get them some more airflow.
