A lot of people get confused by their dogs whining and other reactions. They don't know when to correct it or not.
My dog whines a LOT, its an involuntary drivey thing. Initially it was my reaction to correct this because it was SO annoying and I didn't know better. He would stop for a second shocked and then whine more, I corrected him again and he bit me. Totally involuntary. The only thing that helps is to give him something to do or get myself as calm as possible.
On the other hand people respond to their dog whining/barking for attention and make it worse. Or even if involuntary like in the case of anxious whining, they get anxious about their dog being anxious and make them worse. Even involuntary whining can be a reaction to YOUR anxiety/annoyance about your dog's anxiety.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
Thanks Tressa I actually did watch Michael Ellis's video on involuntary vocalization and that is not really Tanka at least 98% of the time. This is really something that we created by responding to the whining at all. I really appreciate the thought process and finding out what it is before you just arbitrarily correct. J
Tresa/Julie, the difference is the breed in this case. Every rottie I've ever had did this whining to some extent and its clearly for attention. They just don't have that kind of drive like your dutch. We have a dutchie in our schH club and he whines out of drive like that too. Its not the same. My rottie is totally silent in drive.

I am sure from everything you have said that you are correct.
" This is really something that we created by responding to the whining at all."

OTOH, correcting (arbitrarily or not) isn't the way I'd go at all. Especially not for something I've been rewarding all this time.
I agree. I have messed up more than one thing and allowed less than optimum. I never want to correct something without giving him the opportunity to learn what I DO expect. That feels wrong.
