I thought the irish terrier was terrific last night and was surprised it wasn't chosen for some placement.
But of course I don't "get" it at all. The foxhound was SO fancy. So hard to get a hound to have beautiful manners like that, especially in that benched environment. She was my pick.

I confess I'm rooting for Fifi to go all the way...
We were too, since she's a local dog. I wish I understood how you can evaluate all those different breeds objectively and say one is the winner.

Yeah, we're all told it comes down to the one dog that most closely approaches its own breed's standard of perfection, but I think the bottom line is it's one man's or woman's opinion, on one night. I think it's very possible that seven different judges would have picked seven different dogs. After all, they have to be pretty close to their breed standard of perfection to even make it that far.
Greg, just for fun, I compared Fifi's pedigree to my dog's (the one with the pedigree -- the other one is a rescue). Seems they share a great-grandfather, which I believe makes them second cousins! Okay, okay, I know that doesn't count for much, I just thought it was a fun thing to know.

I understand how best of breed is determined, but how can anyone justify a "best in show" determination?
Does the judge really have the expertise to memorize each breed standard AND have the experience judging each breed to make that call? Seems horribly biased.
Has anyone done studies on judge bias and show bias in general? What about their ability to accurately judge measurements without rulers? Sorry, the scientist in me makes me a skeptic of the subjective Actually, I think it would really cool experiment would to have a series of dogs OBJECTIVELY judged according to breed standard (measurements taken and photographed etc), and then have them judged by a series of judges, to see if judges can accurately pick the "best" dog.
On a separate note, here is a photo list of each BOB from the show: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/02/12/sports/westminster-dog-show-best-of-breed.html?ref=sports
I think the ACD is gorgeous, but a bit chubby.

Cheri, how cool is that? At least you can say you're almost related, sort of. My only claim to fame is I got to pet Fifi once. She wasn't impressed.

On a slightly different note (after all, the thread's title asks for thoughts), I just had an interesting conversation with a friend at work. I never really have been a big fan of dog shows. He asked me if I watched it, and as I was trying to tell him that I caught about 10 minutes of the hound class, he tells me how much he loves watching it.
He went on to say how impressed he was with the GSD. I didn't say much, because he was excited about it and I didn't want to be Debbie Downer. He then asks me, "Hey, D; doesn't your dog have a straight back?". I said "Yeah". The one in the show didn't, I bet". He said "NO!. It looked like it was always trying to squat. Even when he was standing still, he never stood straight up. What causes that?"
After I gave him a brief explanation of the difference between show lines and working lines, he says, "Oh. Obviously this was a show line". Obviously.

What was the original rationale for developing the sloped back look of show-line GSDs? I understand that it is not ideal from a working dog perspective, but is it associated with any problems that would concern someone with just a pet GSD?

The Best In Show goes to the dog with the winning attitude. All the dogs were champions,my opinion.
