Julie, if the picture doesn't work out, and if you have doubts, what I would probably do would be to apply a triple antibiotic or Vetericyn and wrap it up neatly so it can't catch on anything or be licked at by the dog.
Then by Monday it will have calmed down (the pain) for removal of that remaining piece, maybe by the vet.
This is JMO, very generalized and not from a health professional.
If it's still bleeding and you need "stop the bleeding" info, just post back. (I kinda figured it's not, since you didn't mention it.)
I got a picture, but it doesn't show much. I can't get the camera to focus if I get too close. But I can use photobucket. It has one drop of blood just sitting there under the piece.
I intend to take him to the vet on Monday unless the piece comes off on it's own. I don't know why I didn't teach this dog to wear a muzzle before I now will need him to. Shame on me.
He has licked it once and when he saw me looking at him, he stopped and that has been it. He is really tired so that helps.
Do you know it snowed here and I took the camera along to the woods to get pics. When we hot back, I loaded them and zoomed in on his foot in one, and he had busted the nail before I knew he had done it, and must have hit it or caught it when he "showed it to me" later on the walk.

OK, I got the pics, and I see what you mean. (There is a piece of the claw still attached, and now pointing up and sideways from the force of the initial tearing action.)
I'm sticking by what I said, unless perhaps Dr. Betty has a better idea.
Here's why: I think the pain will settle down. Right now his whole paw hurts. When it's less painful, snipping off the sharp piece will still be difficult, but nowhere near as hard as it would be now, gripping that sore paw to do it.
Can a wrap be placed so that it's not holding that pointy piece in the wrong direction?
Ouch poor pup. This happened to Logan once...luckily one of the vets was still open. They sedated him and cut off the nail and may have put him on an antibiotic too I can't remember. They also gave rimadyl for the pain but he wasn't even limping at all or acting like it bothered him so I didn't give it to him.
Be safe about cutting off the remainder of the nail, since he has probably had enough. A grooming table would be ideal but if you can somehow anchor his head up so he reach down and nail you for it. After this you may have to do some desensitizing on nail trimming.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
