Great dogs deserve to have their dignity until the end. Quality of life and respect, it isn't about us and our feelings it is about them.
If you haven't gone through this before here is a tip -- get sedatives from the vet ahead of time. Some vets will make house calls too. No drama, drugs before the drive to the vet etc....the vet can come to the car. When my time comes I would love it if someone juiced me up on Valium and took over (that won't happen but I can provide that to my beloved dogs). When I have to say goodbye to one of our pack they are relaxed and out of it, no drama, no anxiety, no pain on their part.

Thanks Connie, I never thought about the heating pad. I will look into that. He does have an ortho bed. He had x-rays about 3-4 months ago, the vet said he looks very good for his age. He is just old.

Mine will go off every couple of hours and heat up his hips for a few minutes, then come back. I've always been glad I bought the pads.
Very nice pics, Laura! That's something I really want to do. I've lost previous dogs that were extremely special to me, and now I have hardly any photos of them. Thanks for the reminder!
