I had rats under my foundation for over 5 years. My previous dog couldn't keep them away. I hired an exterminator one year, but the rats were back the next spring. I got Sadie, and two days later the rats were gone for good. I think she only caught one, but the others got the idea.
She made an example of the one she caught.

That is an excellent Dobie and an excellent Akita!
But my granddog Milo (Border Terrier) traps the mice in a humane trapdoor-type trap, and then he drives them to the forest at the edge of town and sets them free.
True story. $10 per mouse.
Plus gas surcharge.

LOL, from whence 2 become 2000 become 2,000,000,000 in about "two shakes of a dead sheep's tail" just before they all re-locate back to Milo's Crib
It's funny though, because when both my son and I watched that "Terrier Night Patrol" video, each of us did admit we felt sorry for the RATS -- I always kept Pet Rats as a child, and raised my kids to be "like mother, like sons" ... However, we warn Wild Rodents that we won't wreak havoc in their house, but they won't live to regret wreaking havoc in ours (!!!)

They don't come back. None of them like to be in a car driven by an old Border Terrier. He's 17 .... eyesight not that great .... deaf ......

It does kinda seem that a quick snap of the neck (via dog) might be more humane than many of the exterminator methods ....

Some dogs need a bit of a push to start doing what they do. My first Kerry blue would catch huge dump rats and toss them in the air like a game till one bit him on the nose. Never again did he "Play" with one again. It was grab and done!
I'm not a fan of a dog "playing" with the critters for nothing else but for a clean kill. I hate rats but that's no reason to prolong their demise.
For the same reason I switched doing earth work from my Borders to my JRT. The Borders were a natural finisher and were willing to take a licking and keep on ticking. The JRTs were a baying dog underground. NOt a fighter! I saw no need for my dogs to take that licking. We did what we did for farmers and horse breeders, not for the sheer "sport" of the dogs killing. Rats would be another story on that though. There is no reason for their being here, IMHO!
old dogs LOVE to learn new tricks |

Yes, with the Akita Method, the mouse never even knows what hit it -- Shaka locates it with her "radar ears", arcs high into the air, pounces on the furry target with her straight-arm front feet in a perfect two-point landing (she's 100 pounds of lean weight) grabs said mouse in her jaws, and crunches right through the skull & torso in no time flat ... This is just one reason why her nick-name is "Shock & Awe Shaka"
