Can you wrap her bed in an old bedsheet and swap those out daily? or would the smell soak right through?
Man that girl has no idea of the lottery she's won!

Yeah, but I bet she's starting to get the idea that life has taken a turn for the better. I like the part about the excursions to potty being too short; she's pbly already forgetting how miserable it was to have no excursions.
Jamie; you are a hero. Even though I'm touched by your description of this girl and what y'all are going through, it saddens me to think of how she may have ended up on the streets. You said she has obviously had multiple litters... I hope she is not a retired brood bitch that some unethical breeder turned loose instead of rehoming.

I battle this sadness all the time too, Duane.
But then I realize how inspiring it has been to follow Jamie (and many others here) as thrown-away dogs are scooped up and brought to a good home and new security.
You too, Duane, have inspired people.
And what we put our attention and energy on is what we cause to grow and strengthen.

I do think at one time she had at least a responsible owner or breeder, or at least someone who knew what they were doing....this is a NICELY structured dog under all of the not-so-great-health and her problems are clearly neglect related. She was clearly socialized, she's crate trained (though most likely has not been crated for some time considered how pissy she is about being in the crate). She got a glimpse at Gamble bite pillow earlier and got very excited about it (no idea if she'd doing anything yet, and not going to find out until she feels better). Had her hips xrayed and while they're arthritic they were most likely some nice hips as a younger dog. There is NO WAY she's from a local breeder which breed some serious bottom of the barrel showline stuff. I did put a feeler (no pictures, they would need to describe her) on craigslist to see if anyone knows her...She doesn't have an ear tattoo and has no microchip however.
She's loving her 6 tiny meals a day feeding schedule though XD the boys are soooooo jealous. I want her to gain weight but I don't want to make her explode so to get the amount of food I'd like in her we've had to split it up a little...her brain clearly interprets this is "I GET ALL OF THE FOOD"

I love this post!!
Jamie, people like you are what gives me faith that the human race might still have a chance.
I think she's a great looking dog right now. I can just imagine what she will be!
One of the main things I love about dogs, is their ability to live in the present. The way they can forget a bad situation and learn to love life again is about as close to Divine as can be.
Please keep us up to date about her progress!!

A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog. |

also trying to figure out how to get rid of her smell so she can have more freedom in the house and I don't need to go through as many beds.....it's like, crappy diet in a dog who lived in a smoker's house smell.....it's slowly going away with gentle brushing...slowly....
Somewhere on this forum is a recipe for shampoo to remove skunk smell. If someone can find it, maybe you could use that. If it takes out the smell of a skunk, it should be able to make your precious new girl smell better too.
I couldn't find it the first time I looked but I'll keep looking. Thank you for looking out for the seniors/special needs dogs in the world.

From a post by Betty Waldron a while ago:

It works, based on our experience with a skunk a couple of weeks ago. Just make sure you don't get it in her mouth, eyes, or ears.

This worked....a lot Thanks! It'd DEFINATLY dietary smell at this point, now we got the rotting smell off of her I can actually smell "her"...she smells like beneful and science diet.....We did the de-skunk then I used some of Ryuk's super sensitive awesome smelling shampoo to give her a scent back to cover her faint rather gross natural odor. Hopefully with the diet change she'll be much nicer smelling ^_^
Right now meal preparation takes about 25 minutes....rice, small scoop of puppy wet food (Innova), small scoop of puppy kibble (Wellness Core), small scoop of Taste of the Wild (to convince her to eat the Wellness Core Puppy.....she doesn't really like it), fish oil, little bit of olive oil, a musher friend of mine gave me a joint suppliment "Longetivy" she swears by that she uses with the two seniors on her sled dog team so we're trying that instead of normal glucosamine which she tries to eat around anyway (ever seen a dog eat around powder? it's kind of funny). Then her antibiotics.
Stool is still good we'll work on weaning out the rice for more nutritious stuff in the next few days ^_^
