Well he's just adorable!
Maybe he's labxcorgi which could make him pretty darn smart and trainable.
I'm just a huge fan of mutts, unique in their characteristics, often really smart--and some "found" dogs just seems so very grateful for a home.
Keep us posted on his progress!

Who knows the mix. I doubt if he's ever had a purebred anything on his family tree. The coat is certainly yellow Lab-ish. Head is dachshund-like (or possibly Cardigan), with floppy hound ears. But the legs are not the acondroplastic (dwarf) legs of corgis or doxies. They are just short dog legs.
Whatever he is, he laying in a contented pile with the rest of my fools next to the AC vent, all of them full of breakfast.
Chip didn't get any nails trimmed yesterday. But he observed the rest of the gang getting theirs done, and he wasn't frightened by the Dremel. I considered it a success that I could get him to settle in my lap, and I just played with his toes. Baby steps.

Just wanted to highlight this as the perfect beginnings for the nail "procedure."

Just one more update, I promise.
We just got back from our first walk together as a new pack--a brisk 20-minutes through my urban neighborhood (the Von Trapp children do not play, they march!)
Turned out to be a very good test for him. We encountered a woman in a wheelchair, several people with clattering rolling suitcases, diners at a sidewalk cafe (including a very fat, old, irascible chihuahua who was off leash, and his owner that looked just like him). We waited while tubby was picked up, snarling, before we passed. And an ambulance with the siren going.
All in all, a very respectable first outing. He stayed right with me and waited at the crosswalks with the rest of the pack who do so by habit. Chip just found a spot in the middle of the dog pack and followed their (and my) lead. Now they are all conked out.

Please don't stint on the updates!
Integrating a new member to the pack is something you do very well, and something many people want to do well.
Marching along briskly (like Michael Wise, "vacuuming in the pack") and doing what the other dogs do .... with a pace that allows no opportunity for a trial stink-eye .... how better to become "one of the gang"?

Sounds like you're off to a really great start. I'm enjoying the updates; please don't stop!
About the short legs, have you seen what passes for a Lab in the AKC conformation ring lately? He's certainly a mix of something, and I agree that, like so many mixed breeds, you'd probably have to go a long way back to find a purebred anything, but today's show ring Labs have disproportionately short legs (JMO, of course). I'm sure there are some other short-legged breeds in his family tree, too.
I agree with Betty, a healthy, stable-minded mutt can be a great dog.

Yep, marching while on a WALK, is my key to successful walks that are enjoyed by all, also.
He has fallen into step with the pack as if to say..."I am finally HOME"! Good for all of you. You will have wonderful times ahead of you with the new boy.
He & Chico look like 2 peas in a pod. Best buds already. LOL

It's amazing how many walk issues melt away when the pace is a brisk clip .... when the dogs have a job!
I do allow a good number of rest stops, at my call.
But dogs who are marching right along, in the zone, aren't dogs who are scanning the landscape for something to react to or focusing in on a strange dog to do stink-eye (or even a dog within the pack) .... they're generally not even dogs who are pulling me.
I love the picture of Chip and Chico too!
