If you have Amazon Prime (I think it's $80/year), With the Kindle Fire you can borrow a decent selection of books from the Amazon Lending Library for free. And you can stream (or in some cases download for later playback) their Prime eligible instant video for free (providing you have a wifi connection)
We saw that, and we also saw that they will soon be offering the option where you can buy a an e-version, at a very discounted price, of any solid book you have ever bought from them, assuming the electronic version is available. Amazon is doing all they can to make those Kindles irresistible!
In the state I live in, we also have an interstate electronic lending library. So if you're looking for a certain e-book, and your local library doesn't have it (or you don't have a local library), you can borrow it from dozens of participating libraries across the state. I know they've long had this program for solid books, but they've expanded it to include electronic now.
Those of you who have the Fire (tablet style) model, or the iPad, versus the regular or Paperwhite e-reader Kindles, any issues with glare or eyestrain after long periods of time? I learned there is a difference in technology between the two styles, the tablets being an LCD display and the e-readers being what they call an e-ink display, designed specifically for ease of reading.

My sister bought an IPad Mini. It's not much bigger than a Kindle.
You can't really read on the IPad in the sun though, at least on my older model.
One thing the IPad does that I really like is "Facetime", which allows you to make a free phone call to anyone else with an Apple anywhere in the country and talk and see them for nothing. I talk to my sons that way, prop the thing on the counter while I am cooking or doing laundry, its like they are there. For families separated, you can't beat it.

I own both the ipad and a Kindle. I had a Kindle Fire (An early one) but found its connection to the internet too unreliable.
In all honesty this is the fourth ipad that I have owned. I have traded in the earlier models and now own the ipad air. They are more difficult to read on than a Kindle. I love my ipad put do not consider it a substitute for the Kindle. I carry it with me and use the calendar frequently, etc.
The ipad is easier to read the NY Times on than the iphone, though I do have many friends who read on the iphone, my eyes are too old for that.
I have the older Kindle Model with ads, husband's is without ads. The only time the ads really show up is on the screen saver so they don't interfere with reading. My brother in law and sister in law have switched to the Kindle Paperwhites and love them.
There are also many books that can be downloaded to the Kindle from the library for free, but publishers have limited that ability and you only have 2 weeks to read them.

Have you considered a nook? I have a Nook HD in the 7" size they make a 9" as well, I'm the type that prefers a real book in my hands, but have downloaded a few onto it and was surprised to discover I was able to read them with no problems. My internet connection is spot on, I've downloaded movies, and surf the web all the time. It has some minor annoyances but easily circumvented and very reasonably priced, I've had no problems reading outside, inside or at night.

I have a keyboard kindle...It is the 2nd or 3rd generation. I've had it for almost 4 years I think. I also have a kindle fire HD that I just got early this past summer.
I do most of my reading on my keyboard kindle. I think I have more them 400 books on it. I like the size & weight of it. It is great to carry in my pocketbook if I am traveling etc. I reads well in the bright light.(like at the beach or out in the bright sunlight)...but does not have the lighted screen. I got it before that was available. I wish it did have the back light.
I read on the fire also...but it is heavier to hold & does not read that well in very bright light. It is also quite a bit thicker & heavier to hold or carry around in a pocketbook. I also have it in a case & don't with the other kindle. Although I basically got it to use as a tablet. Since I had already had so many books with Amazon... I decided to stay with the kindles then to go to another device.
If I were to purchase a new kindle for reading, I would most likely go with the paper white...for the ease of size, wight, & the lighted screen.

There was a Cyber-Monday deal he couldn't pass up, so my husband has ordered the Kindle Fire HD, in the 7" screen size (the smaller version). He does all of his reading in the house, so trying to read in bright light like outdoors will not be a problem.
I'm going to see how he likes it and try it out myself before I decide what to get, if I get one. I'm not in any hurry. Unfortunately, I work too many hours these days to be able to read as much as I'd like. I will be very tempted, though, if the Paperwhite comes out in a larger-screen version!
Thanks to all of you for sharing your experiences and suggestions.

Wait until you realize how it makes obsolete the weight of a big heavy book while reading in
bed!
That's where I do a big majority of my reading ....

That's where I do my reading, too! My husband usually reads in the La-Z-Boy recliner, sometimes with a Doberman sharing the space with him, so I'm sure he's going to appreciate the compactness of it, too.
It hasn't arrived yet, but either today or tomorrow, I think. He's really excited about his early Christmas present.

I'm on my second Kindle. I bought the original when it first came out, then recently bought the 6" E-ink display model when it was on sale for around $60. I love having the physical book, but the Kindle just makes it so convenient.
I have the Kindle app on my laptop, but after hours of reading it can hurt my eyes. The Kindle never does. It feels like my eyeballs are getting a massage when reading it.

Then you know the pain of holding a book like The Story of Edgar Sawtelle or any of the major 13-zillion-page Stephen King books ( The Stand, It) in one hand while reading in bed!
