WHY do we have to hate on the breed? WHY cant we do ANYTHING BUT ban them from everywhere?
Can't we just have a "dog ownership" course for a "dangerous breed ownership license"?
The people out there ruining the breed are the punks and kids who don't give a darn about the dogs in the first place. They are status symbols.
90 percent of these people wouldn't get or keep a dog if they were required to put in some time or money on the dog just to license it.
The GOOD owners, families, trainers. People seriously into the breed/dogs, would gladly take these courses for their family members (dogs).
Heck i am not rich, but i WOULD find 500 bucks its that's what it took to take a course to own or keep a "dangerous breed".

You can change it in part by being an ambassador for your breed.
We once rented a cabin in the upper Keys and the owner told us German Shepherds had to be leashed. She had a bad experience once.
We were there one day and she told me our dogs did not have to leashed, that we had nice shepherds.
I kept them leashed or on a long line anyways.

Excellent point, Betty!
From an old thread:
Even silly gatherings can have a purpose.
Near where I live, a bunch of Pugs dress up in costumes or maybe just a stars-n-stripes collar or bandana and march in a parade on the 4th of July. It is silly, we know. But the Pugs bring the crowds out, and their "outriders" are extremely well-trained examples of "scary" breeds, including GSDs.
The "scary" breeds walk along in kind of a phalanx around the Pugs, to do nothing more than serve as emissaries with good ob for their breeds.
I have both.
On Dogs in the Park Day, too, there are very silly contests. But there is also a booth with BSL information manned by a couple of humans with their well-trained "scary" dogs.
Good control is crucial. Good PR rests on that.

not all us young folks are the same Social media can be used for amazing things and I know just on my own private fb page I have educated people on pit bulls and puppy mills etc. Also getting dogs rescued and petitions being signed would be not nearly as effective without social media.
old age means realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to- unknown |

I guess if people want to blame kids these days then, well, that's their prerogative. But seeing as many places started enacting BSL about 10 years ago now, well, those kids you speak of weren't the ones writing the laws or voting on them. Tell me how many under people under the age of 30 that you see sitting on city council or county commission or state legislature? Those are the people that write the laws. And, speaking as a person in their early 30s, I can safely say that I see more breed bias from the 40+ crowd than the under 30 crowd. And my mid 30s and under friends are the ones that are more likely to (responsibly) own bully and shepherd breeds. It the idiots that own dogs that are the problem. Not a specific age group. Of coures now that I've outed myself as a "kid" I'll probably get no respect here...

And FWIW, 5 yrs ago I was writing college papers and letters to the editor outlining (with objective data) how bsl didn't work.

Yes, this is insane. Honestly we need some judges to cap the insanity and look the plantiff in the eye and say "dude, animals can be unpredictable, watch you kid when they're around them. case dismissed".
