I was only kidding around Roger. I don't have any superior knowledge or anything else, but I know that if you're going to type something out for others to read, its better if it makes some sense.

I don't have advice, but I feel for you.
I was SO disappointed with my pup during his first 4 mos. I really wanted a pup, but I found I'd bought an alligator. He could not be touched, he had a ferocious temper, he bit hard and fast.
Do what these people say, have patience, be a leader, and give him time outs in the crate when he is over-excited and you are loosing your temper.
My dog NOW is the best dog I ever owned, hands down. IT WILL GET BETTER!!!!

Yes, we do have to be pretty careful -- and literal -- when we're typing a response not only for the O.P. but for all the other readers, and particularly about biting issues. Everyone knows you replied to be helpful.
Misspeak and some one will mention it ... in a mild way, just as happened.

Amazing how tight a bond can be created with knowledge learned and the willingness to put effort into a dog isn't it!
I may have training yrs on you Betty but your one of my heroes with what you accomplished with you dog.

Roger,
I too alerted to the fear biter comment even though I was following the gist of your post. But someone else could take that and run with it in a really bad direction...
guess working with Navy dogs tought me nothing, or being raised with Marine Corps dogs ment nothing, or my brother working Air Force dogs and sharing that means nothing, or Sheba my retired SAR dog means nothing. Or working police k9 with my brother who was a cop after being an air force cop means nothing It looks like you have some experience with mostly young adult to adult aged dogs but not a heck of a lot of puppy experience. They are two different things. Say, as to compare interacting with and interpreting the behaviors, motivations and actions of a toddler with those of a young child of 8 or 9 years old.
Sorry Robbin to highjack your post.

I haven't tried that. But I'd be concerned about any technique that would make the dog distrustful of the owner putting hands in the dog's mouth. It's important IMO for the dog to allow you to put your hands in his mouth for administering pills, brushing teeth, retrieving a foreign objects, etc.
I think bitter spray is best used when it can be sprayed on an object to make it unappealing to chew on--a door frame, table leg, or bandage. Then the dog associates the negative with the forbidden object--not you.
