Tossing a ball and hoping for the best will only create the idea in the dog's mind that consistency doesn't matter.

For newer folks or non-regulars who may be reading the thread, back-chaining means teaching each "link" in the chain of actions that forms the wanted multi-step behavior, in reverse order.
Because the final link is the most well-learned and has the best reward history, when the links are eventually strung together, the dog is moving through less-reinforced pieces of the behavior to more-reinforced.
There are much more lucid explanations of the Premack principle, but for me, it pretty much didn't matter "why" once I saw how effective back-chaining is.
I've taught the retrieve with a lot of different methods over the yrs. Ear pinch, toe pinch, choke, etc.
Back chaining with markers about 10 yrs ago was a HUGE enlightenment for me.
