2 inch wide flat collar for walking, tracking ect. For obedience type training a prong collar. I used a Martindale collar for the first few months of my dogs life. I made an immediate switch when he got caught up in a bush when running off lead. IMO I wouldn't leave them on.
My dogs rarely have a collar on but if they did it would be a flat leather for Thunder the shorter coated GSD and a rolled leather for Trooper the long coated GSD.
For walking around the neighborhood or anything away from my property it's usually fur savers for both.

Kenji never wears a collar at home. Outside he always wears his martingale collar. To me, it is better than a flat collar to avoid the collar flipping over his head. Although he has a big head, his neck is even bigger.
That said, my new pup always wears a flat collar at home, and is on leash ;-)
