I'm so sorry Candi, it leaves a huge hole in your heart and your life when they are suddenly gone, for what it's worth I think you did exactly the right thing rejecting the foul and hideous treatment that is chemo and radio, I had these revolting treatments some years ago, and I have always vowed not to put a dog through it.
Shaka is resting in the warm sun at the bridge, you were there to help her find it, and I know she was silently thanking you for taking away the pain when the time came.

Candi, I am deeply sorry to hear about your loss of Shaka. From your description of events, you did everything you could possibly do, and I would have made the same exact decision you did about not postponing the inevitable.
I understand all too well the difficulty of saying that final good-bye. I hope that the passage of time will ease your pain. I know that Shaka will always be in your heart.
You have honored her memory in a generous way by adopting your new girl, Adobe. I love the name! Congratulations from one Dobe owner to another.

It totally blind-sided me, because my Borzoi Lazar lived to be 14 years of age, without ever getting old either, but Shaka was taken while still in the prime of her life at only 10 still running around like a young PUP.
I'm very sorry, Candi. I relate to that feeling of shock far too well. I, too, got another dog right away. I hope Adobe brings you the same balm and healing that Kolt has brought me.

Aww Candi, having also just gone thru a sudden loss, your words really home. Posting seems to make it so final, sharing that last goodbye.
A beautiful acknowledgment of the life she was, wonderful words for a great girl. Very nice, all round.
Sounds like you got the newer version of Adobe, ears and tail intact.
A passing that's a blessing for both of you, that's so great.

Quoting Connie, praise to you for the "generous gift to a dear friend".
Chemo, radiation, palliative care, non of that was going to be of true benefit to your dog. Brave of you to recognize an unbeatable opponent and put her down while she was still herself.
It is very hard to stop the fight when the dog is obviously still trying. You wonder if you did the right thing.
Be confident in your decision.

Lord Byron inscribed this on a monument for his Newfoundland Dog:
Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who
possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
and all the Virtues of Man,
without his Vices.
This Praise, which would be unmeaning
Flattery if inscribed over human
ashes is but a just tribute to the Memory
of Boatswain, a Dog.
They live with us, day in and day out. The stand at our sides through the good and the bad. They love us no matter what. They give us strength and hope when we can't muster them ourselves. They crush our hearts to tiny pieces when they leave us... they are our best friends. Our dogs....
Unfortunatley, they don't live nearly long enough, and those of us that choose to love a dog, know that one day, they will break our hearts. Yet, we still make that choice.
Why do we put ourselves through it? Because the love, the affection, the good times... they outweigh the heartache in the end. One day, the pain eases a teeny little bit, and you can remember all of they happy times you've had together in the time you've shared your space with your dog. The memories of the good times build, and become smiles. The smiles become laughter. The pain isn't forgotten, but it becomes more endurable with the passage of time....
I believe in the Rainbow Bridge. I believe that one day, I will see my beloved dogs again. Until then, they wait patiently for me at the Bridge, and I give the tiny pieces of my torn heart to other dogs....
Bless you, Candi, for letting her go with Dignity and Grace. Bless you, too for rescuing Adobe- though they would not have been friends, I am sure Shaka is proud of you.
Hugs to you in your loss, and kisses to Adobe for helping you through it.
-Kel

So very sorry for your loss!
As an older man that has had many dogs in my lifetime I can tell you it never gets easier but I'll never be without mans best friend at my side.
Let them go with the knowledge that the smiles they bring us throughout their lives far outweigh the tears we shed at the end.
