I wonder if depression is a common "other side" of the personalities of some comic characters.
Well, I do know that Comedy & Humor can be a coping mechanism used to mitigate (medicate) feelings of Sadness & Hopelessness -- As the old saying goes, "You either have to Laugh or Cry, and LAUGHING Is BETTER" ... Unfortunately, of course, sometimes this may just be a Superficial & Temporary band-aid which cannot heal DEEP WOUNDS <:-(

Has anybody else seen billboards paying tribute to him? I have never, ever in my life seen a billboard honoring a celebrity who has just died. Saw one today on a expressway in Michigan. (IDK, maybe it's a common thing in LA or NYC.)
It was one of those digital ones that rotates between three or four different advertisers. A big picture of Robin Williams caught my eye. All I could read before it changed was, "Comedian, Actor..." something, something, something..."DJ, Alien. Thank you, Robin." I have no idea who the sponsor was.
I guess if anyone deserves it, he does. He touched so many millions with his gift, but it saddens me to know that he was in so much emotional pain that he saw no other way out.

I heard on BBC radio 4 tonight that his wife issued a statement to say he had recently been diagnosed with Parkinsons, so wondering if that had something to do with it.

Our news said he wasn't ready yet to have that go public.
Health issues and his new tv show wasn't renewed for next yr.
Middle aged, white male towards the end of a successful career.
Chronic depression and substance abuse.
The newspaper article about the why someone would do this said he was a classic case in many ways.

Speaking purely as someone who only ever wanted to pay the bills and have a quiet life, to be left in peace, I have never understood how a person with no money worries, a loving family and success would be tortured by insecurities and self doubt.
It really is true, that money, success and fame really doesn't guarantee happiness, so sad

Not surprising to see someone with that level of genius being plagued by demons or prone to substance abuse. It often seems that much of their genius and creativity is because their brains are wired just a little bit off from us average folks.

IMHO, there is quite possibly more to this sad story (on the "dark" side) than will ever be made public -- Either way, it is certainly a tragedy all around...

Parkinson's was pbly the straw that broke the camel's back.
I, for one, believe in living wills, DNR, and assisted suicide. I don't believe in taking the easy way out or leaving your children grieving, but, when all hope for quality living is gone, a person should have the right to choose his own fate.

I agree on all counts.

QUOTE:
""Comedian, doctor, professor, DJ, robot, president, genie, alien. Thanks, Robin."
The salute was developed by an art director for Adams Outdoor Advertising in the Carolinas, said Jim Balestino, the company's Hampton Roads general manager. The company occasionally has space on its billboards, and officials decided to make use of it with a tribute to the actor whose career and talents touched millions.
The message began running Tuesday afternoon and will continue for a few days in several of the company's markets ..... "We just thought it was the right thing to do," Balestino said."
