My understanding in the pack leader groundwork training is that establishing yourself as pack leader is number 1, is that correct? Can marker training be utilized in addition to groundwork pack leader training? He is always in his crate when I am home. I tried covering up the crate, and he pulls the sheet through and shreds it. I don't acknowledge him ever when coming in or out of the home, or even when I walk by his crate.
Sorry Sara, I missed the part where you said this new boy is still in the middle of Groundwork, my bad for zoning out on that -- One way to slip in some casual Marker Training (not formal) if you would like, is to use high-value TREATS to reward for "good busy" as you Imprint a Trigger for doing his job on Potty-Breaks ... My main point though, was not to Over-Do Running with a young dog
Seems like you've had him for going-on Two Weeks now, is that about right ??? IMHO, seven days of Groundwork should probably be sufficient, barring any serious behavioral problems ... And since he sounds like a really nice dog, if he were mine, I would go ahead with his Beginner MARKER Training Hopefully, a few of our Experts Here will also chime-in about this, with the best advice for you!
Sara, I would still recommend exercise for the pup but I do agree that at his age excessive 'roadworking' him is not a good idea.
Why, if he is housebroken, would you keep him in the crate all day at his age? I have a housebroken 5 month old GSD and when I am home, he is out of the crate.
Hi Joan,
I am glad that folks told me that bike rides are not good for him at his age, so we have been doing 2 1 hour walks a day and multiple times outside. He has had 3 accidents in his kennel, but is mostly housebroken. I am in the first week and a half of the pack leader groundwork training with him, and that states that he is kenneled 24/7 except for walks, outside time, and daily grooming. I will go to the next level with him (where he is on a leash in the home) when I feel he is ready. I am hoping that is soon. I have also only had him for under 2 weeks, as I rescued him. I have not had him for 10 months. I hope that clarified things for you.
