i'd suggest showing your friend some videos of mondioring , french ring , belgian ring and KNPV to show what these dogs are really all about . if she is not prepared to at the very least find some way to entertain these drives ( not saying she has to do protection work ) then she is not going to be acting in the best interest of the dog , her family , her neighbors , and any other people she will be coming into contact with on a daily basis .
and then take her by the hand back to the shelter to find her a dog that better suits her life circumstances , and her daughters can fall in love with that dog just as easily
oh , and show her this thread lol :
DON'T DO IT !!!! THINK OF THE DOG !!!!
Ian, thanks a lot, BUT:
A) I've never even MET this woman -- She just works in my friend's office ... If ever I had to deal with her In Person, it would NOT go well, since I'm all OUT of Patience...
B) Apparently the old adage is TRUE that says, "You cannot fix Stupidity"...
C) So the MORE info & links I pass on to Miss Clueless, the more she insists that they are planning to do "everything right" (keep it in a crate all the time & send it away for obedience training) by this poor MAL
If the rescue folks Kristen put me onto are not in time to Stop this Adoption, then I fear we all know what most likely will be this dog's future story.

the people here at the school tell me that the SPCA will not release the dog to another registered rescue organization .
no one here is willing and/or able to take this on .
i'm partly interested myself , but i can just see the look on my wifes' face if i were to return from a three month absence with another dog : " you brought WHAT home ? "
best case scenario : the woman really does take all your input to heart and mind and puts it into action and it turns out to be one of the ( rare ) success stories . all you can do is hope . . . if it does happen maybe try to get her and her daughters involved in some kind of dogsport . maybe it'll be a new beginning for all of them .

Bless your heart, Ian
WOW, I have Never Heard of a shelter ("no kill" like the SPCA in San Francisco, or otherwise, that will NOT release a purebred dog to any Legitimate BREED Rescue organization) but instead Promotes DOOMED Placements of red flag dogs with Utterly Unsuitable first-time owners -- This pup, at barely 5 MONTHS old is still a soft little sweetie, and we can ONLY HOPE that he won't mature into a male version of our beloved Fama belonging to David Winters ... However, even the "Average Malinois" would be WAY Too MUCH for that Highly NON-DOG Oriented family's unsettled lifestyle (none of them are ever at home for long enough periods at a time to properly care for a house-cat even) !!!
Now I'm well & truly FRUSTRATED

candi , i may have misquoted or misunderstood my colleagues here at the school regarding the SPCA and other " rescues " . they , in turn , referred to " woofproject " as the place for mals here on the west coast .
my colleagues have quite a bit of experience with rescue dogs and organizations and mentioned the SPCA is known for its' motivation to operate in the black , if you know what i mean , hence the not always optimal matches of dogs to homes .
but like i said , the best case for the dog is that this one turns out be a success story . . . keep us posted if you can .

No problem, Ian, it would have already been Too Late for the "woofproject" to intervene in this case anyway, as it turns out the Clueless Family picked that Mal up last Wednesday evening -- All I've heard 3rd or 4th hand so far, is the poor dog pees a gallon on the carpet when they let it out of the crate (FOOLS) ... And the woman RUNS it FIVES miles every morning before work (this is a 5 MONTH old puppy) !!! Pretty soon I'm going to force myself to "tune out" or I'll lose my mind As you say, this is all in the hands of "the dog gods" now & the best we can hope for is that One-in-a-Million BEGINNERS' LUCK Success Story.

ABMR (Malinois Rescue) unfortunately has no west coast resources, all west coast dogs are referred to Woof Project.
She's running a puppy?
My head is hurting.
