oops...lets try this again. I feed my work dog a raw/kibble mix twice a day. Unfortunatly he does not chew his food, he swallows the whole bowl in about 15 seconds. I've become paranoid about feeding him once a day because of his hurried eating.
I feed my dogs once a day because of their activity level. You don't want to subject your dog to high activity at least two hours after they eat. And like Deanna, they get fed at night, after a cool down period.
Also consider, some dogs, when fed twice a day will need more poo breaks. A bit of a distraction when your trying to work.
I waited until my GSD was a year before weaning her to one meal a day, she was a slow grower. I did over a two week period by slowly reducing the amount she got for breakfast and added it to the dinner.
I had a GSD pass away in 1993 to what I now know was bloat. She was fed kibble twice a day.
Some good points for consideratin here from all of you. I have often wondered about this for my situation as well. I have a 17 month & and 5 month old GSD's. Both eat 6 cups of kibble a day, and are highly active. I have been worried about giving 6 cups for one meal where I usually split it up. Plus my older dog literally inhales his food and walks around stiff legged like he's about to puke it up from eating so fast. I like the idea of feeding them late at night (Deanna) makes sense to me.
Originally posted by Deanna Thompson: There are some vets claiming that less frequent feedings actually strenghten the stomach muscle by allowing it to go from full to empty. Intriguing.
Do you have a reference for that argument. I am not challenging it. I find the whole thread interesting and I may switch to once a day if I can avoid the yellow urks.......perhaps they adjust if their stomach alarm clock does not go off? Mine is now 13 months and was also a slow grower and probably has some more but not much to go.
Well- I probably can't back it up today... I am headed to training tonight and then leaving to train out of state tomorrow for a couple days.
At anyrate- it WAS probably something on the internet- so even then- it is hearsay. Not something I read in a JAVMA journal. Kibble DOES stay in the digestive tract for a much longer time than raw food- so even if you are feeding 2 times a day with raw- the stomach is getting the opportunity to contract.
ooh- here is a blip from Martin Goldstein DVM
The Nautre of Animal Healing- pp 218
"Another contributing factor to gastric torsion may be too many generations of the easy life, with pets eating preprocessed foods that don't require the stomach to do its own processing, so that the stomach muscles grow slack and are more likely to swing and twist."
The yellow bile pukes can be avoided with "cookies" during the day(it only takes a couple)- or if you are working your dog during the day- the treats they are getting usually stave off the "I'm starvin' " pukes.. lol..
