I did a search on the whole site here using the term "leash pressure," since that is what your puppy will need to learn but hasn't learned yet. I found this video, which is almost like Michael Ellis answering your question personally!
If you search the site here, including videos, online courses available, Q&A, and the discussion board, I think you will find a lot of helpful information.
I would only add that I find myself agreeing with Greg in a previous post that, if this scent work instructor insists on quiet and perfectly behaved dogs in class (and that's understandable), it may not be the best fit for your four-month-old pup. Maybe give him a few more months to mature a bit and work on good manners and focus before putting him into a class that demands such discipline. There are so many other things you can work on for now.
That thunder leash will probably stop working within a few weeks. Most of them that I've seen have. It does not work on the same principle as the thunder shirts. It works by causing discomfort when the dog pulls. Same as a prong collar just unwieldily and offers no control of the head. Many people prefer them because they "look" kinder but causing discomfort is causing discomfort.
At that age I would teach a settle command on a mat or place cot. I would also consider bringing a crate to tuck pup into with a chew during long breaks from working. Especially if your class is the style where only one dog works at a time.
You can use a prong on a pup that age. It's just a lot to ask of a 4 month old pup to settle in class perfectly.
