That Bob I believe :| I found Pyr's to be the same. I can say tho, I hand plucked my Border, and found that to be way more tedious than brushing out a matted Pyr for 5 hrs. You almost needed thimbles on the thumbs to get the whole body plucked on my Bandit!
From what I have seen and read, most people now shave the OES in the summer, and save the heavy grooming until the fall/winter months. Not sure I would go that way myself, all trial and error would be my way to go!

Hi Becky,
I do NOT recommend Shaving an OES -- Their coat Protects them in Summer from HEAT & BUGS -- We used to see some Idiots also Shave their AKITAS, which is a Bad idea for the Same reason...
Glad your Bears respect a four-wheeler !!!

Candi, I agree, I never shaved my pyr either. I will clip around the feet and eyes!
Thanks for the heads up on that! I am sure grooming will be a learning experience, but I look forward to it!

IMHO, s/he would "not really be" an OES without the Eye-Veil And those furry "bangs" do not obstruct their Vision -- Is there some other Far North reason for removing it, Becky? (Just curious, is all...)

The clipping will all depend on the bugs, the Breeder suggested the clipping in the summer months, I plan on playing it by ear for the eyes, it will all depend on how bad the sandflies get. They love the eyes and bellies of dogs here. I do have livestock spray but hate to use it unless I have to, as it stinks! I will most likely not have to do any clipping but around the feet, as we are sandy/muddy and wet here.
These are the exact reasons why I ask you lovely folks! To stop me from making silly mistakes!!
I can't believe how quick Jim was to agree with getting a pup. I thought for sure he would hum and haw!
I will have to invest in a good conditioner for the coat tho, and proper brushes.
I do hope the veil does not mat up if he/she is a head burying snow lover! My Emma used to bury herself in the snow so deep all you saw was a doggy butt sticking out, hence the constant mats behind the ears!

I plicked/stripped all my terriers and never a big issue but then again most were 12 - 16 lb.
The Kerrys had a single coat like a Poodle and that would be a mess when I ran them in the woods.
I always show groomed them and that was 99% scissor work.
old dogs LOVE to learn new tricks |

It never made your fingers sore Bob? Bandit loved being hand stripped, and we would just sit on the floor for a few hours and by the end I swear I almost developed blisters! I have fat thumbs tho, so will lay the blame on that! His new owners do not hand strip, and tho I told them shaving is a no no, they still have him shaved at a groomers.
We will have to wait a long time for a pup, as this is the only breeder in MB, and I do not want to purchase from a show home. We may not even get a pup this year, and may have to wait til next fall. I cross my fingers!

And to clarify, the livestock spray is only used on dogs backs, not on their face! I used it on my pyrs, as the sandflies would climb in their fur and bite the crap out of them. On the face I usually spray muskol on my hands ans swipe anywhere the tongue can't reach. It has never affected any of my dogs, tho they do hate the taste when a tongue gets too close to my hands! The livestock sprat stinks, so I only used it on walks where they could swim it off.
