That's just perfect, I envy you and your kids and grand kids for this!

I never had a dog growing up, we did adopt a shelter had when I was 10ish, but my dad sent him back less than a month later, he wasn't nice to us and destroyed everything.
Harry is starting his training this weekend. It was the blue buffalo food that gave him diarrhea, so I bought some nutro to slow switch him too. He is now at the bitey/ keep away stage, so is going to need to start his marking training asap. As soon as his diarrhea clears up, we shall start, until than, when he gets too sassy or throws a tantrum when they leave for the day, i crate him til he calms down.
Walks are a breeze! He can bound around for 30min no problem, and is slowly learning that he can't be eating every twig, branch or grass he passes!
We are in bliss with this boy, he puts himself to bed at 9, I wake him at 11pm to potty, and than he is out til 6:30 am
Currently he is in the crate after a whining/ barking fit while the kids were getting ready for school. He is a quick learner, so I am sure he will catch on that he needs to behave to be around the family!

The "bitey/keep away stage" will only get worse if not addressed as a young dog or pup.
What I've done.
I feed the pup with the bowl with half of the meal and when it's empty I add a little bit to the bowl by hand.
That has worked for me and It lets the pup/dog that anyone or hands coming to the bowl is a good thing.
In my "good old days" I had no problem knocking the dog on it ass.
Today's thoughts are that a dog may just suppress it's anger to avoid the correction until it finds itself pressed to hard then they explode.
I've not had this happen but I see the possibility of it happening.
Even doing what I talked about takes a bit of knowledge in reading your individual dog.

Bob, the bitey is happening during petting, he starts with licking, and than the teeth come out, and either he nibbled or full out grabs. We deter with a nope, and pop a toy in the place if a hand. But sometimes he is just in the mood for a nipping, I did notice when he has to poo, he bites, rather than whimper or pace, he will walk right up and grab you, so I watch, and catch him before he gets to that stage.
I can see a suppressed tantrum happening every time he hits the end if the leash, but thankfully he us not at all possessive of food, toys or long lasting treats, and likes when I hold a treat for him so he can get a better grab.
His feeding is a dive for the bowl, but I will not put it down til he keeps a sit, and he after 10 min at lunch, and less than 2 at supper, is catching on quick, that calm is better than diving.
My only stump is the collar, I love his attitude, but the grabbing of objects with walks or yard time could hurt him , so not sure if a harness would be useful to protect his neck, or if I should nip his taking off in the bud, and pop a puppy prong. The foxes here worry me, but I want him and I to be both enjoying and learning, painless. For ad long ad we can be. My arthritis begs me lol

How old is the dog now?
Teething goes on between about 4 and 6 months. After that the biting "should" taper off if handled properly.

He is 12 weeks Saturday, after Connie's link in the puppy training question I had, we figured out his cues today, he is biting when he has to go poo, and when he is over stimulated. I crated him more often today, for longer, and he was great, and more calm. Hid shut off button wasn't working. For the poop biting, I ask him to sit, and put the outside leash in him and take him out. He is not breaking skin, or clamping, more of a mouthy soft bite.
When he bites in play. Even with the kids, we are replacing with a toy, and out to g him in a sit to get the toy, as long as everyone stays on the same page here, I think he will do great!
Collar wise, I may have to use the harness outdoors, as I think he is too young and sift for the prong, and want him to explore when given the time to do so, we have plenty of time withmarker training to teach leash manners, we have hit -43windchill. So the short bursts we have outside, I want him to keep moving and get his business done without worry of him self correcting with the leash just yet.
