Here is a little shop vac tip. If you use one hand to brace the area you are sucking and angle the vac opening, while holding it directly on the dogs skin, it will not suck Fido into the black hole. It will also eat all that extra fluf that just does not come off with a brush or rake.
I don't think the dog's like it much, but tough beans.
I think I just came up with a new invention. The dog brush/rake vac head attachment. How cool would that be?
They already make them Vancamp. The clipper vac is a vaccum that attaches directly to the clippers and sucks up the hair as you go. They have also made attachments to hook to your regular vaccum that resemble different brushes and then there are your horse vaccums. If you have a GSD you might as well have the horse vac
GSD= German Shedding Dog
When my neighbours rescued Siberian husky blew his coat last May it was the first time I was witness to such a phenomena. I have never seen that much hair come off a dog that wasn't clipped off. He lost half a dog and looked so skinny and bald I kept checking to make sure he was ok and did some more research on shedding and coat growth.
I urged her to buy a good grooming rake. I had never used one before and it worked great. It really stripped out all the undercoat. He hardly lost any of his guard hairs or top coat. As GSDs are usually referred to as "constant heavy shedders" I assume they always loose a lot of coat not just as a seasonal blow out?
If you brush your dog outside the birds will really appreciate the extra nesting material.
It was nice to see the husky was back to his plush self once again in the fall (with no extra help from me or his owner).
German Shedding Dog Har har har.... that's a good one!
Leute mögen Hunde, aber Leute LIEBEN ausgebildete Hunde!
I appreciate all the info you have given. I haven't let it get out of hand. I brush at least once per day and sometimes more. I have tried the vac but it doesn't seem to do much. I will try the blower and see how that works. I am still learning about this breed as this is my first. So far it has been great but I still have a long way to go. It has been challenging. It is also the first older pup that I have gotten.
Thanks again for all your help.
Cecil,
Try as I did and make using the LEAF BLOWER a game. Vancamps Vac use looked promising. I'm going to try using it around the upper neck behind the ears.
The sheeding is a small price to pay for having such a fantastic K-9.
Good Luck!
I bought a dog hair dryer and I blow as much hair out as possible when they blow their coat. In fact I did two of the dogs yesterday. It works like a charm and the birds just love me after that especially after I groom my parents Malamute. Now talk about shedding. You don't know shedding til you blow one of those suckers out. She loses at least ten pounds twice a year just in hair. It takes me a good two hours to groom her but when I'm done she doesn't shed again until fall. She just about due to start shedding....
Go to one of the major pet stores, they have sticky roller thingies (yeah thats a technical term) - u roll it over stuff n the sticky paper picks up loose particles (such as dog hair and lint) off the thing u rolled it over, when its filled up u rip off the sheet n repeat. That thing has ROCKED for getting hair off the couch! My German Shedding Dog used to bark at the roller, so I decided to roll it on his back so he knew it was ok, he stopped barking at it since then, and it worked out as an ok way to get all the loose laying hair thats on his back, altho the shop vac with ur hand cupping it at the end does a better job... I thought I was the only one who did that
Duck tape wrapped around your hands is actually a little better than the roller. Most rollers use a weaker adhesive than the tape does. The tape is cheaper too.
