You could also try Turkey Red oil in the rinse water. Turkey red, or sulfonated castor oil, is a water-dispersable oil; it actually mixes with the water rather than floating on top. We used to use this on horses with dry skin (and I use it in my bath water, mixed with chamomile *g*). A few drops in some clean water, pour over Kane and massage into the dry areas, then a QUICK rinse over the top of the coat to get rid of any "greasiness" that might cling to the top hairs.
I had an AmStaff with super dry skin, and this really helped her a lot. You might have to do a search and order the oil - I get it from Liberty Naturals, but other companies often run sales.
I have Kane on Flax seed oil now and I bought an oatmeal shampoo and I was amazed! His coat was so soft and shiney after his bath no flakes at all! Thanks everyone for the great advice!
We used to have problems with Hairy(GSD) shedding flakes when we gave him a bath. We switched shampoos (we were using Seargeants) to Nova Pearls and I couldn't believe what it did for his coat. This type of shampoo has a conditioner in it that keeps the soap from stripping the coat of it's oils and drying the skin. We bought this at Petco. The price wasn't bad but definantly worth it.
