The top two dogs pictured are completely different dogs. The top a bitch, owned by Mary Walsh named Red who is trained in both Sch and Ringsport and the second a male, my in reserve waiting to be stud dog Rocky II.
Axel, who is a tad potent, still gets his pick Babe at over 12 years of age.
Can you spot the imprinted behaviour shown during the bite that maximizes bite power.
Both dogs shown are my Axel's Kids from opposite genetic Dams also from our breedings but the similar body position was imprinted during basic training of the mid leg/knee bite with the leg being drawn backwards to accept the bite.
Imprinting is certainly a worthy topic for discussion and more. Genetics+environment/experiences=phenotype/(what you end up looking at in a dog or pup)
Puppies are most vulnerable to this environment side of the equation in the begining and it would seem that a lot of problems (not born by genetics) will be caused or worked through before 8 weeks of age.
Are there books and/or videos that deal with this topic out there?... There should be <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Imprinting is a new word for me. I always thought it was socialization or learning at a young developmental age. This is a web site I used when working my pup. I guess you would call it imprinting. What do you think?
Hi Milt, socialization to me is another seperate aspect of training that goes hand in hand with imprinting.
Allow me to give a very good example of what an imprinted behaviour is.
Oil of Anise is ultra repugnant to dogs. Equate wanting to puke if you were to taste or smell it if you were a dog and dogs will avioid it at all costs.
That is unless you imprint it into a newborns life before he gets that first slurp of milk from mom.
Scientific study has shown that if you were to smudge oil of anise on to moms nipples and then place a brand new to this world pup on to this tit the puppy will eat as this is a simple genetic survival drive that makes the baby eat beyond the scent that it at birth can detect and the olfactory system logs for future reference.
Now, never allow this puppy to come in contact with oil of anise for a few years.
One day when the pup is ready for dinner pass a bottle of the oil of anise under the dogs nose and the dog will begin to salivate when any other dog that was not imprinted at birth will turn up it's nose and say yuk.
Remember Pavlov and the dinner bell. That's an imprinted response.
"Does anyone want to take a shot at how to imprint a just weaning pup to learn how to track with a full nose to ground first time and everytime there after tracking human scent complete with a turn."
Jerry, are you teasing us or what. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Let's here it man <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
Rocky II looks impressive with his "forwardness" alright. Is there something you are doing prior to 8 weeks to incourage that, or is this trained along with the counter later on. When you say "during basic training" I assume the latter.
This dog was born and imprinted to stick hits and the deep bite at 6 weeks. At 7 weeks I had two strokes and open heart surgury and was unable to do any more work with him for almost two years. Nothing of any seriousness that is as I had to learn how to walk and think all over again. I am the luckiest person God ever gave a second chance to.
Those picture's that you see of him bitting are the very first time he has bitten since my chest was cracked open two years prior.
No lies and he never was shown a suit ever before.
Nose to the ground puppy track with a turn.
I will give you the ingrediants to the recipe and you tell me if it will work.
Two sided tape
Scurf from yourself and some clippings from your own electric razor along with sweaty t shirt material fluff.
Shaved hair from moms underbelly, around her mouth and her rear end.
I for one am glad that you are up and thinking again. You certainly have got the wheels in my head turning now. I can't put it all together yet (two sided tape?), but I feel like I'm on the verge of "enlightenment". Where did you pick this stuff up at? My guess is... NOT from books.
How many different things can you accomplish with your cocktails?
Just send me some hair clippings and a dirty T-shirt and I will have this pup accepting you as his mom/teacher before he even meets you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Jerry , let me get this straight imprinting is done from birth to 8 weeks. The pup still has to be with mom and littermates. I would imagine any serious imprinting would take place at 6-7-8 weeks. There should be an abundance of research on this subject. Take one pup from the litter and use the others for a control group.
