I think there are pros and cons for the health question on both sides. I do believe that many of the health "pros" are promoted by major groups in this country because it helps their agendas. ASPCA for one, and they have a valid concern. How many unwanted dogs are there in this country? Does it mean that there are no health risks for the fixed dog, no.
The development of secondary sex characteristics is absolutely linked to hormones, that is what they're for. So, if you don't want to hurt the total potential for your working dog don't get them fixed. If it is done after age 2 there will be little difference in the temperament of your dog (protection wise IMO). If you don't want that extra "Umph" of aggression that comes with sexual maturity then get them fixed before they start to develop, like ASAP.

That's where I originally read about the information. I've also heard Lou Castle give his insight on this as well. I hope this helped you out Dobermanlova.

This argument is where you will find the most instances of the classic "follow the leader" "knee jerk" "everyone says so so I should do it too" reaction. Cause someone starts the claim that dogs who are neutered are less likely to get prostate cancer or whatever, try to back it up with some so-called factual statistics...yada yada yada.....everyone follows along. I don't 100% buy all the so-called facts. I will agree that there are some medical reasons that will make neutering necessary. Overall, I would not neuter a dog I intended to do work with, unless of course a testicle didn't drop or something that would make it absolutely necessary. I'm with VanCamp....if you must, do it after the dog is 2 years old.

What can I add? Maybe it is just not normal... I was shocked when i heard about fixing dogs when I came to the States. But I suppose it is all about responsibility, there are too many irresponsible owners.
You should have seen a reaction of my husband when he heard about it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> . But on the second thought he said that maybe it is not such a bad idea, if the poor intact dog is not allowed to do "these things" never in his life LOL

Why is it that some of the goofballs that scream and holler about cropping and docking are the first ones to tell you to cut your dogs nuts off?
I think both are personel decisions and you have to make up your own mind, for your own reasons.

OldE,
I'd like to think it's because pet overpopulation is a serious issue. I'm at our local animal control every week, and I see how many animals come into that place, and not all of them are happily reunited with their families. The average pet dog owner has no clue about how to keep their dog under control. I wholeheartedly support spay/neuter for the average companion dog owner. It prevents the needless suffering of unwanted animals.
For working dogs, the issues are different, because by and large, you'll find that people who own and train working dogs are more knowledgeable and responsible. Even so, I believe that spaying/neutering is still a personal decision.
I realize I'm making some sweeping generalizations, but I have observed these things. This is just my opinion.

If I had to get him fixed, and I don't often do it, I would wait for around 2 1/2 years, just to be safe. (29+ months or so??)
If your vet starts giving you a rasher of shit about it, tell 'em to shut the -F- up and go to another vet. Vets need to remember that we are the customers, it isn't their damn job to lecture once you have made your mind up.

well, i had all intentions of getting my dog fixed before i got him. after reading the various discussions on this board i have decided not to.....ever; as from what i have read, the Dobe has been watered down enough over the years.
my intentions will be to primarily train him as a 'watchdog'and to keep the bit of aggression he may still have in him from his predominantly s#%w lines would be nice.
