Ok, one more generation back on the father's father's side: Cilly vom Bourtanger Moor, Link von Muikenshof....father's mother's side: Troll von der Bosen Nachbarschaft, Yoschy von der Dollenwiese, Fanta vom Schipkapass, Fee vom Grohengauer-Land.....mother's father's side: Don von Rolansteich, Neumann's Janko,Dunja vom Bernet, Gipsy von der Schafbachmohle.....Mother's mother's side: Troll von der Bosennachbarschaft, Ypschy von der Dollenwiese, Britta von den Dreizehn Pappeln, Kimba vom Haus Gremm....sorry,I appreciate all the help for everyone's insight
Don produced big headed dogs, but from what I have read, and talked to people that had close Don's they were good looking big boned dogs, that had protection drive, but little prey. You have a great pedigree though.
Scott--there were East German show and working lines both, although in the DDR the line of distinction was much, much more blurred. Don for instance--although he appears in many working peds--was the sire of the 1985 East German Sieger.
I'm fully prepared to be flamed for this but my experience with the DDR lines is that they generally produce lower defensive threshholds and somewhat sharper dogs (however in your case the majority of the genetics is strong West German stuff). The DDR dogs were popular with some breeders--still are, in fact--because as Michael pointed out they produced big heads, nice bones, and great great pigment.
Thanks for all the info....could someone explain what line breeding means, and what 4-4 on Troll means? And, I guess I should have worded this better from the start, but I didn't start this thread simply to get info on these dogs...what I'm really curious about is why the breeder would choose to breed to these dogs. Ed states in his articles every breeder should have a goal; I'm wondering if any of you, through looking at the dogs in this pedigree, can spot what was going on: was the goal to produce crazy ball drive, hardness, civility, handler softness, etc.?
Linebreeding means that the same dog are both on the father and mothers side of a certain dog. A 4:4 linebreeding on troll means that this dog appears in the fourth generation in the pedigree on both sides.
However, the bottom line in your case is that you have some strong working dogs on both sides of the family. My guess is that your dog should have a lot of drive and probably a little edge as well (from the DDR stuff). I'd leave it to the experienced breeders to give you a better idea of what to expect here. I'd be willing to bet that, with proper handling and socialization, your dog will definitely do the work.
