Since I have worked w/ a number of dogs from Mink lineage Ed asked me for a brief synopsis of my impressions of the animals I have expereince with.
This is by no means a complete and all includive list. Nor is it a attempt at degrading Monk or his lineage, as I believe that he will be important in the working lines of the GSD for a long time.
"Hectic but driven, some handler agression problems, control problems when trained all in prey and then trying to add defensive behaviors over the top or eliciting defensive behaviors via strong compulsion.
Good hunting drive.
Piss poor stops on many.
Sometimes small dogs.
Generally good police dogs.
Generally good environmentally but some notable exceptions thru Malatesta.
kick ass hips
How is that for a quick overview?"
Lewis's litter was poor for hips as well. Seven pups xrayed. Only 1 A-Normal, 2 A-Fast Normal, 3 Noch Z, and one bad hips. This is not what you want to breed with.
When Mink lines were really popular a few years ago. a German told me that he was not fond of them as a lot of them were nervy.
I have bred a Mink Granddaughter who is a good bitch, but some of her offspring are a tad overally sharp and a bit small. Her sister is also very sharp, towards strange people. I have not seen a really nice Lewis line dog yet. I am sure there are a few, but I have yet to see one.
I agree that Mink is a good dog to have in a working pedigree but he is not a cure all.
Yes, my Mink gd is nervy as well. Prey drive is so-so, dog aggression is insane. But she is healthy. She was a quasi rescue, given to me by the breeder. Not a pup I would have chosen, frankly.
In subsequent breedings of the same parents, all the pups are pretty much the same, some are really oooogly, this girl is quite pretty as are some of the others. Quite sleek and slinky, reminds ya of a panther.
I expected better working abilities, I'd always been told that was a Mink trademark (her grand dam is out of Haus Antverpa, go figure; her dam is Czech). Very willing in obed, but again the drive just isn't there. Could be a lovely pet.

He wasn't a shitty dog at all just nothin' special. He did have quite a bit of handler aggression, he learned early on that he could fight his handler instead of be made to do things. This is why we got the dog. It was resolved but not unti quite a few items of clothing and a few puncture woulds were obtained by his handler. Once they sorted it out after quite a few months they were a productive police dog team, until that got worked out I questioned whethef to keep him on the road. His performance in all areas was mediocre until he decided to take his position and submit to what the handler chose for them to do at any given time. This problem crops up occasionally in the mink stuff.
Originally posted by VanCamp, Robert: Arko von der Parkstraße Robert, I have an Arko daughter, SchH3. I would have a million more like her. Very clear headed, solid nerve, tons of drive, and strong fight in protection. Only real complaint I have about her is that she was dog aggressive (controllable) and I had to retire her at 5 because of back problems. She is a big bitch with a masculine head. Here is her picture: http://zutreuenhanden.com/Photos/Treueheadshotweb.jpg
I also have a young SchH1 bitch whose dam, Citty Haus Ming, was linebred on Mink (2-2). No dog aggression, very dominant, a bit stubborn (coming more from her sire), high drive for toys, tracking, and loves the fight (with the helper or me). She is also clear headed, I can work her anywhere, and she is a very fun dog to train. You can see this ugly girl here: http://zutreuenhanden.com/Photos/Nikestand02web.jpg
